action

Wolfgang Klemm is unable to take part in the ceremonial handing over of the Abitur certificate , which is why his father has to pick it up on the stage on his behalf. He does not understand that he is to blame for this situation because he had previously treated his son at home like a small child, so that Wolfgang lost his nerve and spent the morning elsewhere. After visiting his grandfather and the teacher he trusts Mr. Weimann, he goes to the evening graduation ceremony and apologizes to the teaching staff. After this party he goes home with his girlfriend Katharina, where his father is waiting for him to celebrate his Abitur with him. Here Wolfgang argues with him again and emphasizes that he doesn't want to be like him.

The next day he goes to the Baltic Sea on a tandem with a friend , but the two also fall out. Now Wolfgang decides to hitchhike to the People's Republic of Poland alone . After a couple in a Wartburg 353 annoyed him with their conversations, he got out and was taken across the border by an army vehicle belonging to the Polish People's Army . A soldier gives him the address of his parents in the mountains, whom Wolfgang now wants to visit. On his march through the mountains, he lies down in his sleeping bag overnight and is not woken up until the next day by a group of climbers whom he joins. Through the group, Wolfgang slowly finds his way back to himself and he falls in love with the German mountaineer Hannelore.

After his return to the GDR , Wolfgang began working as a laborer in a steelworks and became friends with Brigadier Hotte. He also visits Katharina, but his thoughts always end up with Hannelore. On the day when he gets his first salary, also comes convened for military service in the NVA , so he immediately to Berlin goes to Hannelore, who works there in a children's hospital. The chief doctor releases her and they both drive to her home. Over dinner, they make plans for how they will spend New Year's Eve with their Polish friends. Only the next morning does Wolfgang tell her that he is being drafted into the army. Although he has known for the last two years that this moment is coming, he is very angry that he cannot decide for himself when.

After completing basic training , Wolfgang gets his first vacation and is already expected by Hannelore in his hometown, where she also meets his family. After his return to the army, Wolfgang with his entire group and the NCO was assigned to serve at the state border with the Federal Republic . The team is supplemented by the deputy group leader, the private judge, with whom Wolfgang has to carry out his first patrol at the border. Here Richter reveals that he only wants to use the time at the border to climb the career ladder more easily in later life , which Wolfgang does not like. Back in the room, he explains to the others what kind of phrase thresher the studied historian is.

Hannelore wants to visit Wolfgang surprisingly, but is arrested when entering the border area . The interrogating captain , who has already had several conversations with Wolfgang and therefore knows him, learns that he has only sent one postcard to his girlfriend in two months. Hanne is given private accommodation in the village and can be visited there by Wolfgang. But he has to go back to work after two hours and when he wants to visit her again, she has already left again. But it is clear that they will soon meet again.

criticism

Katja Stern states in New Germany :

“Here director Celino Bleiweiß [also] established the great connections between the boy's emotional world and the class warriors of the present in memorable scenes aimed at emotional impact. This is where the film's style, which is very much aimed at impression and food for thought, really came into its own. "

Gisela Herrmann wrote in the Berliner Zeitung :

“Drawing a lively picture of the present has its difficulties: after all, everyone can examine it carefully. This film passed such a test. An everyday film, therefore definitely not an average film, on the contrary. "

Mimosa Künzel writes in the Neue Zeit :

"Director Celino Bleiweiß catapulted himself way forward with this idiosyncratic, dignified, but in spite of all seriousness intimate-cheerful film production, it is his first work with which he really caused a sensation."

The Lexicon of International Films describes the film as a film full of dialogue about the moral problems of young people. He gave the opinion of official politics when the question of armed service in the National People's Army arose.
