The joint work Blut und Paukboden was discussed widely and controversially. In 2000 he received his doctorate in political science .

life and work

Teachers and political didactic contributions

After graduating from high school in 1983 , Heither did community service as the last year at the Heinrich Schütz School in Kassel . This was followed by a degree in German and history in Mainz and Marburg . He completed his German and social studies studies (to become a teacher) with the state examination. Then he was a student trainee in Wiesbaden.

Today, Heither works full-time as a teacher for politics and economics, German and history at the Heinrich-Böll-Schule, a cooperative comprehensive school with high school in Hattersheim am Main . He also holds the office of headmaster there. He has the official title of Director of Studies .

He is also co-author of the political didactic textbook series Mensch und Politik for the subjects of social studies, social studies and political education in secondary levels I and II , which is published by Schroedel Verlag . He was also involved in the “Social Science Studies for Secondary School II” of the Schroedel Verlag.

Confrontation with fraternities

History workshop Marburg

Heither became an employee of the Marburg History Workshop, founded in 1984 - a registered association specializing in Marburg regional history and everyday history . Furthermore, Heither was a co-founder of the Marburg project “Conservatism and Science”. According to Gerhard Schäfer , “critical corporation research was expanded” with their publications. Both projects are still considered to be the incarnation of “leftist historiography” in connection circles. Publications by or in the context of the history workshop - including Heithers - are criticized for the fact that they “aim to de-legitimize the connection being, as it were, historically”. It was not mainly historians who worked there, but rather political and social scientists with a focus on contemporary history. According to Matthias Stickler, some older work is not very worthwhile.

Publication "Blood and Paukboden"

The work Blut und Paukboden (1997), published jointly with Michael Gehler , Alexandra Kurth and Gerhard Schäfer by Fischer Taschenbuch Verlag , is regarded by some observers as a (critical) standard work . It was u. a. Discussed by scholars in the German quality press and in German and English-language specialist magazines: William D. Bowman sees it as an essential contribution to political, social and cultural history. Even Geoffrey J. Giles recommended it in a review. Dieter A. Binder summed up: "In sum, the work must be seen as a successful attempt to present an analytical history of a social phenomenon among students and academics in German-speaking countries, apart from house historiography and party-politically motivated demonization." According to Günter Wollstein , however, the authors of the volume are "not concerned with an overview or overall history of the fraternities". “A nationalistic register of sins” was presented, which was nonetheless “meticulously and well researched and documented”. The study lacks an adequate "historical classification" of events. It is also generalized, so that "interpretation difficulties" arise. For Kevin McAleer , on the one hand, the book corrects misunderstandings regarding the political orientation of the fraternities and their relationship to National Socialism, on the other hand, there are hardly any new conclusions. McAleer identified historical ambiguities and contradictions. Armin Pfahl-Traughber thinks it is an "informative, but sometimes a little undifferentiated history of the German fraternities". The student courier judges differentiated: "Concentrated and comprehensively informative, certainly provoking fruitful controversy, encouraging further reflection and discussion, a piece of German history is communicated in 'Blut und Paukboden', which can certainly be historically and currently equally explosive, but at the same time helpful in determining the position of corporations today. "

Political science dissertation

In 2000 HEITHER in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy was Marburg University with a by Reinhard Kühnl a prominent representative of - Marburg school - supervised political science thesis on the German fraternity (DB) for Dr. phil. doctorate (dissertation: A corporated men's union - a social-scientific study of worldview, politics and customs of the German fraternity ). In the “Introductory Notes”, an express thanks went to his “not only [..] scientific friend []” Gerhard Schäfer. The doctoral supervisor saw with the submitted dissertation and the previous book from 1997 an "essential development strand" worked out. In his “material-rich” work, however, Heither refrained from using the archives of the DB archive (attached to the Federal Archives ), as historians have stated. The fraternity member Harald Lönnecker also attested the work to be political one-sided.

In any case, Heither takes a critical view of the theming of student corporations, especially the fraternities, within the scope of his journalistic activity. Corresponding contributions have been appearing since the mid-1990s in relevant anthologies dealing with the extreme right . In his 2015 study with Adelheid Schulze, "The Mechterstädt Murders On the History of Right-Wing Violence in Germany", the authors use the example of one of the darkest chapters of the Marburg history of connections to show the causes and the serious effects of right-wing violence in the student environment. It is proven that u. a. the continuity of a pre-democratic judiciary. The "comprehensive mentality and social-historical contribution to the history of the early Weimar Republic" (Christian Dietrich) is recognized in a meeting of the Association for Hessian History and Regional Studies as follows: "Even if the book's evaluations cannot be shared on all points, so here is an overview of sources and documents that is impressive.
