action

Commissario Brunetti comes back from his vacation and is informed by his colleagues about the current status of their work. During Brunetti's absence, Maria Grazia Battestini, a wealthy widow, was murdered. Since Florinda, the Romanian cleaning lady, was believed to be the perpetrator, Vice-Questore Patta had declared the case closed. Brunetti is not so sure because Assunta Gismondi, a neighbor of the widow, who gives the cleaning lady an alibi, answers. This is no longer of any use to the poor woman, because she fell fatally while fleeing from the police. But Brunetti's interest is piqued; he wants to find the real culprit. The widow was not very popular and was known to be domineering and greedy. Neighbors also report an argument they overheard, but they hadn't seen anyone.

In the meantime, Gabriel, the cleaning woman's son, arrives and demands justice. He turns to the lawyer Roberta Marieschi, who also has to settle the estate of the widow Battestini, whose niece Graziella Simionato is the main heir to the estate. But according to Brunetti's research, all accounts were closed one day after the murder and the money was transferred abroad. The niece doesn't know anything about it. Thus, only the lawyer Marieschi could have abused her power of attorney and took the money.

For Brunetti, it is clear how the money disappeared, but where the widow's wealth came from is still a mystery. Regular payments to the accounts can be proven over the years, which are not in line with the salary of Signora Battestini's deceased husband, who worked for the school authorities. While Brunetti is investigating this question, a poison attack takes place on lawyer Marieschi, who immediately accuses Graziella Simionato. She admits the attack, but it should only represent a threat; the lawyer is back on her feet quickly.

In the meantime, Gabriel is still demanding justice and threatening Vice-Questore Patta for opening the investigation against his mother. Since a sergeant can intervene in time, Patta gets away with the horror and encourages Brunetti to continue investigating the case. When the inspector tries to look around the widow's apartment again, he discovers signs of burglary and finds a letter that the intruder was probably looking for. This proves that the head of the school board, Mauro Trotti, had obtained his doctorate illegally. Since Trotti is currently scheduled for the office of State Secretary, he must have asked the widow to provide this proof. For many years she had blackmailed him with the knowledge of his false title. Brunetti confronts Trotti with his research, who admits to having killed the “greedy old witch” after she asked for more money, which he could not possibly find.

criticism

For the Lexicon of International Films , Donna Leon - Evidence That It's Evil was a "solid (television) crime thriller set against the picturesque backdrop of Venice."

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv judged: “Every year Commissario Brunetti comes back, always in autumn, when the days are falling in this country and the sun is showing less and less. The viewer likes to put up with Venice. A crime is little more than a puzzling accessory to an environment in which the family is everything and in which the viewer therefore feels at home. [...] It is the rituals, the looks, the everyday situations that give this rather average crime thriller charm. But all these little nuances would not be worth mentioning if Uwe Kockisch did not give the Commissario Brunetti ever more convincing. "

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm gave the best possible rating (thumbs up) and said: "Oops: The gondola ride surprises with speed, wit and even a bit of amore for a change." As an overall conclusion they drew "Mamma mia: Brunetti finally" al dente "".

Fabian Böhme atquotemeter.de remarked: “The script is more than successful. The story is opaque, even the most absurd thought is shattered after a few minutes. The viewer cannot get through in the course of the story, you only know who the killer is when it is finally resolved. The dialogues are a treat: charming, humorous and above all not superfluous. The audience can be entertained in the 90 minutes with jokes and situational comedy . Grandmother Brunetti was particularly successful: Her anecdotes from her youth, her casual sayings and her facial expressions are more than amusing. ”As a minus point, he rates the names used, which are“ consistently complicated ”and also very similar. “You get confused, you no longer know who is being talked about. That doesn't make watching it very relaxing. "
