Dylan & The Dead (also Dylan and the Dead ) is a collaborative live album by the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan .

history

The album was created during a joint tour of the same name in July 1987 through stadiums in the United States . It was published on January 30, 1989.

It was produced by Jerry Garcia and John Cutler, who together produced the Dead album In the Dark . Dylan wasn't directly involved in the production process, but he had a strong influence on it. Garcia mentioned in an interview with Rolling Stone that he didn't dare say "no" to Dylan even when everything in him said "no" and produced accordingly.

Dylan himself said in an interview in 1995 after Garcia's death that he was an excellent musician and an incredible person and that no price would do him justice. He had filled the musical gaps between The Carter Family , Buddy Holly and Ornette Coleman without belonging to any particular musical genre.

Rick Griffin was once again responsible for the album cover , who also created the cover for Aoxomoxoa . It shows the lettering Dylan & The Dead as a 3D relief in red and yellow, plus an approaching locomotive in profile, next to it a typical Dead logo (skull with roses) on the right and the head of Bob Dylan on the left.

Rolling Stone rated the album rather negatively. The music journalist Robert Christgau followed suit . Allmusic even went so far as to rate the album as possibly the worst album by Dylan and the Deads.
