action
Jules parents died very early in a car accident. Therefore, she grew up near Hamburg with her grandparents Rosi and Walter, who prepared her very well for life. Even if, in their opinion, life cannot be planned, they tried hard to get their granddaughter on the right track. In the meantime she has passed her law exam and has the fixed goal in mind of gaining her first professional experience abroad. The interview for this first important job is exactly on her birthday just before Christmas, which is why she leaves the small party with her friends Daniel, Sebastian and Lexa very early to have a good rest. As luck would have it, this evening you met Max, a young actor who is currently volunteering as Santa Claus. At first glance they both like each other and spend the next few hours talking until the Jules cell phone alarm rings at four in the morning. She always sets the alarm clock to four o'clock on her birthday to look forward to the new year of her life. That actually brings her the longed-for job, which, however, means saying goodbye to Max again. But since she has a clear plan for her life, she goes her own way and leaves Max behind.
After a year they meet again. It's Advent again and Jule has decided to quit her job and stay in Hamburg for the time being because her grandfather suffered a stroke. Therefore, she wants to use the time she still has with her grandparents to be around her. When she wants to bring Max this good news, she now has to hear from him that he is going to Los Angeles for a long time . Now Jule remains disappointed. In the course of the year, Jule turns to her college friend Daniel, but she is not really happy with him. When she has to read in the newspaper that Max's dream of Hollywood has shattered, she wants to visit him. It's Advent again, but she finds a drunk man who has not only lost his dream, but also completely lost his footing. When he finds out that Jule has become engaged to Daniel, he makes a scene to her at the party, whereupon Daniel sees clearly and separates from Jule. Meanwhile, Max has "nothing better to do" than sleeping with Jules best friend Lexa. Despite this disappointment, Jule does not leave Max alone with his problems. They spend the coming weeks together with Rosi and Walter, so that Max can get his life back in order. Everything seems to be fine when suddenly Lexa shows up and tells Max that she is pregnant. Max has no choice but to face his responsibility and leave Jule again.
Another two years passed and Jules grandparents decided to realize their long-cherished dream of a trip to Thailand. That means that Jule has to spend this Advent and her birthday alone. So she finally decides to celebrate with her old friends again, but when she meets Max there too, she can't stand it anymore and runs away. Lexa goes after her to comfort her. Both talk to each other and Jule learns that Lexa and Max are no longer together. Max would only take care of his son and therefore come by regularly. When Jule goes to the Elbufer on her birthday and her cell phone alarm rings at four, she meets Max here, who has also come to the place where they met for the first time, and smiles at her. After four years of ups and downs, the two finally find happiness together.

Reviews
Julian Miller fromquote meter rated: "A beautiful, unexcited, a bit kitschy, but stylishly told Christmas film" "for the happy holidays". He went on to write: “Much of what one can accuse the Herzkino otherwise does not really want to bring up here. But that is not only due to Christmas daydreams and a possible general gentleness and indulgence at the turn of the year, but also to the very loving drawing of the main and secondary characters, which have nothing woodcut-like or stereotypical. You can feel that the authors took great pleasure in their characters and wanted to tell a basically believable, touching and moving story that can also resonate with those viewers who otherwise prefer ambitious content, provided they embrace this film with an open heart can approach. "
Rainer Tittelbach from Tittelbach.tv described a smile at four o'clock in the morning as a “love drama” and one “of the particularly rare heart cinema outliers in 2017 ”. The production is "an 'honest' love film with a serious core, which contrasts the young couple's desperate 'pursuit of happiness' with the happiness of their grandparents' generation in a neutral way. The authors avoid the romantic clichés by not getting lost in general, but always looking for the individual, the special: It starts with the characters, continues even more clearly with the top cast and film director Ruzicka shows off despite snowflakes the calculator that feelings can be conveyed sustainably even without heart cinema aesthetics. You don't even miss the real snow-winter feeling. "
"As pre-Christmas lovers, Natalia Belitski and August Wittgenstein are surprisingly quick to pull off the leather, which was to be expected from the outset from the slightly older gentlemen Cornelia Froboess and Tilo Prückner as a light freak," said Hans Czerny from the TV magazine Prisma . Hamburg “looks like New York with its brick facades , and the sound track swings“ I'll Be Home for Christmas ”. What more do you want". The television magazine rtv found that Kosmann conjured up “a love story that is as unconventional as it is complex, and which at no time seems unrealistic. On the contrary: Between the usual Pilcher - Lindström - Fforde - Herzkino -Kitsch, Jan Ruzicka's A smile at four o'clock stands out with refreshing honesty. Natalia Belitski and August Wittgenstein make a believable couple in whom the chemistry is just as coherent as their long search for the right path ”.
