geography

location

The iceberg rises in the north-eastern part of northern Hesse in the Fulda-Werra-Bergland , part of the eastern Hessian mountainous region, on the border of the cities of Spangenberg , Hessisch Lichtenau and Waldkappel, with a peak in the area of Waldkappel near its district of Hetzerode and almost 100 m southwest of the summit running border from Schwalm-Eder-Kreis to Werra-Meißner-Kreis. The summit of the mountain at the northern beginning of the Stölzinger Höhe (Stolzhäuser Ridge) is 1.7 km south of Reichenbach (Hessisch Lichtenau), 2.4 km west of Wollstein (monastery near Waldkappel- Harmuthsachsen ), 2.7 km northwest of Hetzerode ( Waldkappel), 2.8 km north-north-east of Bischofferode , 2 km north-east of Weidelbach (both Spangenberg) and 2.6 km east- south- east of Wickersrode (Hessisch Lichtenau). The northern parts of the mountain belong to the geo-nature park Frau-Holle-Land (Werratal.Meißner.Kaufunger Wald) , the southern border of which runs over the mountain peak.

The Pfieffe, an eastern tributary of the Fulda, rises on the west-southwest flank of the wooded iceberg . On its northeast flank lies the source of the Vockebach , which passes the mountain to the north as a northern Pfieffe tributary in a rather elongated left curve. On the eastern flank, a little south of the Große Steine, the Hetze rises as a west-northwest tributary of the Schemmerbach .

Parts of the fauna-flora-habitat area Werra- und Wehretal extend to the eastern flank of the iceberg (FFH no. 4825-302; 244.8191  km² ).

Around 1.3 km northeast of the iceberg, a little south-east of Reichenbach, rise up the Dolomite rocks, the Große Steine, which are designated as a natural monument, and about 3 km northwest of the mountain, beyond the Vockebach valley, on the 522.3  m high Schlossberg are the Reichenbach castle ruins .

geomorphology

From a geomorphological point of view, the iceberg is part of the northern boundary of the heavily forested Stölzinger Mountains, which in turn corresponds to the south-eastern boundary of the extensive Frau-Holle-Land geological park.
