The 1996/97 season was the 58th season of the Eliteserien , the highest Norwegian ice hockey division . Champion was for the third time in the club's history Storhamar Ishockey . Hasle-Løren Idrettslag was relegated to the second division.

In the main round, each of the ten teams played a total of 36 games. The eight best-placed teams qualified for the playoffs in which the champions were played out. The penultimate of the main round had to compete in the relegation against the runner-up in the second division, while the last place in the main round was relegated directly to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
