Emiliano Raúl Sala Taffarel (born October 31, 1990 in Cululú , Santa Fe Province , † January 21, 2019 in Guernsey in the English Channel ) was an Argentine football player .

Career

Sala grew up in San Francisco in the Argentine province of Córdoba and was trained in football at Club Escuela Proyecto Crecer , which has connections in particular to the French club Girondins Bordeaux . In 2010 he moved to Girondins Bordeaux and subsequently played in the reserve team; for the professional team, the striker only came on February 8, 2012 in the second half of the extension of the last sixteen to the Coupe de la Ligue against Olympique Lyon for a brief assignment. With no prospect of missions, he was awarded to US Orléans in the third class National (D3) for the 2012/13 season and scored 18 goals in 37 league appearances during the season. It was also awarded the following season; At the second division Chamois Niort he was again 18 times successful in 37 games, and scored as many goals in his last twelve appearances. In the 2014/15 season he finally made his debut for Bordeaux in the first-class Ligue 1 . After eleven appearances in the first half of the season - four of them in the starting eleven - and one goal, the club officials decided to borrow again for the second half. At first division competitor SM Caen , he scored five goals in 13 appearances.

For the 2015/16 season , FC Nantes Sala signed a transfer fee of around one million euros . There he scored six league goals in his first season, in 2016/17 and 2017/18 he scored twelve goals each season. Despite these figures, he did not play a role in the squad planning under coach Miguel Cardoso at the beginning of the 2018/19 season , but a move to Galatasaray Istanbul was not possible at the end of August 2018. After Cardoso's dismissal, he was back in the starting line- up under his successor Vahid Halilhodžić , on his home game debut, he scored a hat trick in a 4-0 win over FC Toulouse . By January 2019, he had already scored twelve league goals in 19 appearances and, in addition to a more offensive orientation under Halilhodžić, also benefited from the two outside players Anthony Limbombe and Gabriel Boschilia . Sala drew occasional ridicule from fans for his clumsy running style and speed deficits, in the opinion of the Guardian he was "basically the archetype of the powerful South American striker who is blessed with more physique than elegance."

Disappearance and death

Cardiff City fans express their condolences

On January 19, 2019, Welsh first division club Cardiff City announced the signing of Sala for a club-internal record transfer fee , subject to a license to play .

On the evening of January 21, 2019, a Piper PA-46 with Sala on board on the flight from Nantes to Cardiff disappeared from the radar 15 minutes after take-off about 20 kilometers north of the Channel Island of Guernsey . The last contact was at an altitude of 700 meters with Jersey Airport . According to British police, Sala was the only occupant on board the aircraft other than the pilot. As Sala's father confirmed to the press, the footballer sent a voice message to relatives and friends from the plane. An extensive search operation with helicopters, airplanes and a ship was canceled after three days with no result.

The cup match between Nantes and Entente Sannois Saint-Gratien , scheduled for January 23, has been postponed at the request of FC Nantes. On the first evening after the plane disappeared, hundreds of FC Nantes supporters gathered on Place Royale in Nantes to commemorate Salas and the pilot.

On February 3, 2019, the aircraft wreck was found in the English Channel by the search team commissioned by the relatives, led by David Mearns, at a depth of about 63 meters. A body was recovered from the wreck three days later. On the evening of February 7th, Guernsey police confirmed that it was Sala. According to the autopsy , he died of severe injuries to the head and chest. In addition, a potentially lethal level of carbon monoxide has been detected in Sala's blood ; It is still unclear which technical defect on the aircraft led to this. Furthermore, the pilot did not have the necessary authorization to carry paying passengers and had not completed any training hours for night flights.

Compatriots like the football professionals Lionel Messi or Gonzalo Higuaín and Argentina's President Mauricio Macri publicly expressed their condolences.

On February 16, 2019, Sala was buried in his hometown Progreso as part of a public funeral service.

Around three months after the death of his son, Emiliano Sala's father Horacio Sala died at the age of 58 as a result of a heart attack .
