The Erckensmühle was a watermill on Broicher Bach in the city of Herzogenrath in the North Rhine-Westphalian city region of Aachen in the administrative district of Cologne .

geography

The Erckensmühle was located on Broicher Bach on Dammstrasse in the city of Herzogenrath in the Aachen region. It was at a height of approx. 109 m above sea level . The Erckensmühle was the last watermill on the Broicher Bach before it flowed into the Wurm. Above was the Berger mill .

Waters

The sources of the Broicher Bach with a height of 174 m above sea level are now located in a rain retention basin between the streets In der Dell and Holzweg in the Linden-Neusen district of the city of Würselen. The creek with a length of 8.2 km is a tributary of the Wurm and flows to the north in a westerly direction through the area of the city of Alsdorf and then to the city of Herzogenrath. In the road area An der Wurm / Apolloniastraße the Broicher Bach flows into the Wurm at a height of 106 m above sea level at km 35.0. A reservoir , located about 500 meters above the mouth in the Broichbachtal recreational area, regulates the flow of water from the Broich Bach into the Wurm. The water association Eifel-Rur (WVER) is responsible for the care and maintenance of the water .

history

The Erckensmühle was one of two town mills in Herzogenrath. In history it was also given as the so-called oil mill on the dam. This dam was east of the city center in the district of Ofden . It had been piled up to stop the water masses that made the very strongly fluctuating Broichbach dangerous when the rain continued.

The mill from the 18th century was initially exclusively an oil mill. In a valuation of the properties in 1776, an annual net income of 135 thalers is assumed. That was about a fifth of the approach for the Bannmühle .

In the Tranchot map of 1805, the mill is called "Moulin à Than", the French name for tan mill . From 1820 there is talk of a fulling mill . In 1836 the Erckens brothers from Aachen took over the mill, and in 1850 they relocated part of the Aachen textile production here. From then on it only bore the name Erckensmühle. Despite the switch to steam power, the mill was shut down in 1908. In the 1970s, one of the former production buildings burned down and was closed down; socially disadvantaged families lived in the remaining multi-storey building. after the demolition, a fire and rescue station for the city of Herzogenrath was built here. The former porter's house is now the last remnant of the building in red brick construction on Erkensstrasse.
