history
In 876 King Lothar II acquired in an exchange deal with the Jülich vassal Otbert a. a. in comitatu juliacensi in commarca bardunbach curtilen cum… molendini loca II - a small courtyard with two mill stations in the county of Jülich in the Bardenberg district . This is what it says in a document , the original copy of which from the 10th century is kept in the Trier City Library . It is not said which mill locations were meant.
In the first half of the 13th century, there is evidence that the Klosterrath Abbey received income from a mill near Bardenberg. In 1566 a document gave the first mention by name. As a ducal-Jülich'sche mill, it has the place Bardenberg as a prohibited area .
In 1836 the mill, which was also called the old mill , was operated by three undershot water wheels that drove two grinding stages and oil presses . Around 1900 the Bardenberger mill was shut down. After temporary residential use, the mill buildings have been expanded into a hotel and restaurant since 1972.
