The Welsche Mühle is a mill in Aachen with an overshot water wheel . It is located in the Haaren district and is fed by the water of the Haarbach stream. It is currently no longer in operation due to damage to the mill wheel.
geography
The Welsche Mühle is located on Haarbach, at Mühlenstrasse 19, in the Haaren district in the Aachen city region in the Cologne administrative district . It stands at a height of approx. 147 m above sea level . Below the mill, on Tuchmacherweg, is the confluence of the Haarbach in the Wurm at 144 m above sea level, above are the mill buildings of the Kahlgrachtmühle.
Waters
In earlier times the sources of the Haarbach were at a height of approx. 231 m above sea level near the former Driescher Hof in the city of Aachen. Today the brook begins near Gut Neuenhof. The stream with an original length of almost 9 km is a tributary of the Wurm and flows northeast towards Eilendorf , crosses under the Aachen- Eschweiler railway line . The further path of the creek runs in a north-westerly direction, south past Verlautenheide and then into the center of Aachen- Haaren . In the city center of Haaren, the Haarbach is largely canalized. On the Tuchmacherweg, the Haarbach flows into the Wurm as an open stream at a height of about 144 m above sea level. The water association Eifel-Rur (WVER) is responsible for the care and maintenance of the water .
history
The mill dates from the 15th century and was first mentioned in 1452 in the Schleiden fiefdom register. In the beginning it was called simply the mill of upper hair or ... over hair . The name "Welsche Mühle" appears for the first time in 1780 and refers to the owner at the time, Aachen citizen NC Charlier, who probably came from the French-speaking area and was therefore called "der Welsch".
In the middle of the 19th century the mill was operated as a colored wood mill for a few years , from 1861 again as a grain mill as before . There are two grinders, one for rye and one for wheat .
After the Second World War , the Welsche Mühle was in poor condition, but it continued to operate until 1961. During a storm in June 1961, the lock on the Haarbach, which dammed up the water for the mill moat, was destroyed and not rebuilt. In 1962 the mill became the property of the city. Initially it was supposed to be demolished, but then it was decided to keep it and the restoration of the buildings began in the 1970s. The mill ditch was not restored, instead a pump was installed in the Haarbach, which pumps water into the mill pond when required . From 1972 onwards, the mill wheel , which had also been restored, could be put into operation again. In the meantime, however, the grinder had deteriorated to such an extent that it was no longer able to grind flour.
In 2006 the mill wheel was completely restored again. Thanks to the help of the Haarener Heimatverein, the grinder was then repaired so that flour could be ground again in August 2008. However, the performance of the pump is not sufficient for continuous operation. In 2012 the millstones were restored by a Dutch specialist company. The mill wheel has been running very irregularly since 2015 and has not been able to operate since then.
Todays use
The listed mill complex is available to citizens and associations for conferences and festivities. The registry office has also been holding weddings there since 2011 . The district library and the Heimatforum and Heimatarchiv of the Heimatverein Haaren / Verlautenheide 1984 eV are housed in the adjacent building.
