Location and history

The museum is located in and around the historic Hamburg-American watch factory (HAU). This was founded in 1875 by Paul Landenberger and Phillip Lang, initially as the "Landenberger und Lang" watch factory. In 1883, Landenberger renamed it Hamburg-American Watch Factory, which has since become a stock corporation, because the headquarters were initially in Hamburg and watches were manufactured according to the “American system” (use of machines and material savings). In 1929, HAU was taken over by Junghans . The area still consists of many monuments of industrial culture, e.g. B. the Art Nouveau building of the former substation and today's Diesel Museum and the former machine building.

architecture

The former factory building HAU 3/5 was designed by the industrial architect Philipp Jakob Manz . The building is a listed industrial building and has been renovated to preserve it. The armored windows are a special construction and the forerunners of today's laminated or insulating glass windows. The design of the windows is typical of the time, with elaborate details and valuable fittings and panes. The museum extends over 5 floors and 3500 m². The upper floors can be reached via an elevator or the stairwell.

Division of the car and clock museum

The museum is spread over five floors, which are traversed in chronological order from top to bottom.

In the "History of the clock in the Black Forest" section, the development of the clock from 1800 through industrial production, the clock crisis to innovative developments and today's production is shown. A historic watchmaker's workshop belonging to the Junghans company is part of the exhibition.
  • 3rd floor: Post-war years: "Necessity makes inventive"
  • 2nd floor: years of construction 1950–1955 "Everyone wants cars"
  • 1st floor: Years of awakening and economic boom in Baden-Württemberg
