Ernst Rebentisch (born January 31, 1920 in Offenbach am Main ; † December 3, 2013 in Kronberg im Taunus ) was a German officer in the Wehrmacht , later a surgeon and medical officer in the Bundeswehr . Most recently, he was Chief Medical Officer and inspector of the medical and health services of the Bundeswehr.

Life

Rebentisch was born as the youngest of six children of the Medical Director of the Offenbach City Hospital, Erich Rebentisch . After graduating from high school in 1937, he completed the obligatory Reich Labor Service . He then became an officer candidate and in 1939 a lieutenant. In the Second World War he was a captain and in 1944 a major in the army (Wehrmacht) . Highly decorated, he temporarily led the 23rd Panzer Regiment of the 23rd Panzer Division on the Eastern Front . On January 12, 1945, he was seriously wounded at the command post in Borbálapuszta ( Fejér County , Hungary). He was in a military hospital for a long time and then came as a staff officer to the Army High Command in Berchtesgaden . At the end of the war he was interned by the Americans. In 1963 Rebentisch self-published the book To the Caucasus and to the Tauern - The History of the 23rd Panzer Division (1941–1945) .

In the post-war period in Germany Rebentisch studied human medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich until 1950 . This was followed by surgical specialist training in Offenbach. In 1959 he joined the Bundeswehr as a medical officer. He was the chief medical officer (LSO) of a NATO liaison team, later advisor at the Ministry of Defense and division doctor . Rebentisch drove the establishment of the reserve hospital organization. From 1969 to 1973 he was commander of the Academy of Medical and Health Services of the Bundeswehr in Munich, then deputy to the inspector of the medical and health system. From October 1976 he was himself inspector of the medical service with the rank of chief medical officer . Rebentisch headed the medical service at the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972.

Rebentisch was already a lecturer in disaster and military medicine at the Technical University of Munich , which made him an honorary professor in 1975 . Rebentisch was involved in the German Society for Disaster Medicine , which he co-founded in 1980 and of which he was the first president. From 1980 to 1991 he headed the Disaster Medicine Committee of the German Medical Association and was a member of its Scientific Advisory Board. Rebentisch aggressively dealt with critics from the medical peace movement that was strong around 1980.

Rebentisch was married and had a son. He was retired in March 1980, most recently in Kronberg im Taunus .
