Ernsthausen is part of the community of Weilmünster . The place is in the central Hessian district Limburg-Weilburg , north of Frankfurt am Main and near Weilburg . Since Ernsthausen was in what was then the Oberlahnkreis until the creation of the Limburg-Weilburg district in 1974 , it was also referred to as Ernsthausen (Oberlahnkreis) .
Geographical location
Ernsthausen, located in the eastern Hintertaunus and thus in the Taunus Nature Park , is traversed by the Weil , a tributary of the Lahn .
history
The oldest known documentary mention dates back to 1308. However, it can be assumed that Ernsthausen existed a few centuries earlier. According to tradition, the old Ernsthausen was built to protect against the bad floods of the Weil in the higher Urschlag.
It is not certain whether this settlement was completely destroyed by a major fire in the Middle Ages or by devastation during the Thirty Years War , so that no traces of it remain. The place was rebuilt further downstream and expanded on both sides of the Weil. The town center was probably located in the area of today's bridge. A single homestead is said to have been there earlier to the right of the Weil.
In the first few years Ernsthausen, like the entire lower Weiltal, belonged to the County of Diez , to the Tenth Seiters and to the dean's office in Kirberg. Then the county was divided and Ernsthausen came to the county of Diez-Weilburg and the new manorial court and later office of Weilmünster. According to a document from 1310, the Weilburg monastery received the right to receive the grain gradient (taxes) from Ernsthausen. In 1391, Bishop Ekkard zu Worms enfeoffed the knight Konrad von Essershausen with the tithe of Ernsthausen. In 1724, Count Karl August von Nassau-Weilburg bought these rights, so that from now on the Ernsthäuser were taxable in Weilburg.
In August 2008 Ernsthausen celebrated its 700th anniversary with a historic market. This was organized by the Ernsthausen 2000 eV association founded for this purpose .
Territorial reform
As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the former market town of Weilmünster in the Oberlahnkreis merged voluntarily on December 31, 1970 with the previously independent communities Aulenhausen, Dietenhausen, Ernsthausen, Laimbach, Langenbach, Laubuseschbach, Lützendorf, Möttau, Rohnstadt and Wolfenhausen to form the new large community of Weilmünster. Essershausen was added on December 31, 1971. For all 12 formerly independent municipalities, local districts with local advisory councils and local councilors were formed according to the Hessian municipal code.

- Ernsthusen (1330)

church
In the 20s of the 19th century, the church built in 1766 burned down and had to be completely demolished. The new church was consecrated in 1832. A branch school was established in Ernsthausen around 1615. Until then, the Ernsthausen students had attended the school in Weilmünster.
economy
Small farmers with sideline business
As in the neighboring communities, the residents of Ernsthausen were mostly small farmers. Since their income was low, they tried to improve their income as charcoal burners or iron farmers who worked in hand or treadmills to extract iron . Until the Thirty Years War Ernsthausen only had about 30 households.
Boom in mining
At the end of the 17th century, when local mining experienced a great boom, the population of Ernsthausen also rose. In the Weilmünster office, Ernsthausen gradually took the most important place alongside Weilmünster.
Former railway line
Ernsthausen used to have a train station on the Weiltalbahn . The railway line was built in 1889 and dismantled in 1990 after passenger traffic had ceased in 1969 and freight traffic became unprofitable. A planned reactivation in connection with the upgrading of the Grävenwiesbach-Bad Homburg railway line in the early 1990s failed. Today the Weiltal Cycle Path runs along large parts of the dismantled railway line.
