Three years after Madonna's last studio album Like a Prayer , which artistically and commercially exceeded all expectations, Madonna released a concept album.

In 1992 Madonna left the tried and tested, slightly poppy paths that had given her hit after hit for almost ten years. Instead, she produced an album full of funk and jazz elements that was not easily accessible with the DJs Shep Pettibone and André Betts. At the same time as the album, Madonna's book SEX was published, in which she presented her naked body in addition to her sexual fantasies. In addition, the erotic thriller Body of Evidence by Uli Edel started , in which she wanted to try her hand at the side of Willem Dafoe as a film star. Madonna's sexuality-related content was often received negatively in the tabloid press.

Elaborate videos were again made for the singles: The video for the song Erotica contains the stylized representation of BDSM and other sexual activities. David Fincher shot a video in the style of a thriller for Bad Girl with Christopher Walken , Stéphane Sednaoui shot a typical work for Fever , and Mark Romanek's video for Rain has won several awards (including the MTV Video Music Award ). Visually Madonna was convincing, but in fact her career came to a standstill for the first time - ironically, she had just made herself independent with her own record company Maverick.
