geology

The Eschberg consists mainly of finer sandstone, as you can still see traces of it in the forest. On the south of the Eschberg, however, there is shell limestone and rock instead of sandstone.

Waters

There are some bodies of water on the Eschberg, but many have dried up. At the edge of the Eschberg the Kieselbach flows into a pond. There are several ponds in the park, but one is already swampy and another has dried up. There is also a small spring there. In the past, the stream that flowed through the three ponds to today's Brandenburger Platz and flowed into today's zoo pond was also called the Eschbergbach .

history

About the name of the Eschberg

The name most likely comes from the ash trees at the Eschberger Hof . According to other sources, a certain Esperger Hensel is said to have owned a manor that no longer exists today.

Local history

last surviving building of the Eschberger Hof

The Eschberg was settled early on. Today's road Eschberger Weg was built very early on as a simple path up the Eschberg. Some finds from Roman times were discovered at the foot of the mountain. Around the year 1400, an Espergers Hensel (according to some sources also Espergs Hansel or Eschbergs Hans ) is said to have owned a farm. The Eschberger Hof is one of the oldest buildings there. Some parts of it date from the 15th century. Around 1800 a mansion and a cemetery were built. In the baroque period it was an estate belonging to the rulers of Nassau-Saarbrücken . Around 1870 there was a quarry to the south of today's zoo and Goerdelerstraße , and there was also a funicular railway here until 1926 . In 1937 the city of Saarbrücken bought it and made plans to develop a residential area. This took place in 1954 and from 1958 houses were built. The Eschberg has been a residential area since 1963.
