The base of the Winterberg Monument, rebuilt after 1975, is located on the Winterberg . The monument, built between 1872 and 1874, commemorates the Franco-Prussian War and was blown up after the outbreak of World War II in 1939 for strategic military reasons. Today there is a memorial plaque on the base of the monument, which commemorates the German and French war victims. Between 1956 and 1958 there were Saarland postage stamps, the surcharge of which should benefit the reconstruction of the monument.

Former vineyards

Several vineyards are said to have been located on the Winterberg . Today the street name Weinbergweg , which is located below the Petersberger Hof, still bears witness to this. The Mügel family is said to have set up a vineyard here, which the Saarbrücken winemaker Karl Ries employed for it. In addition, the Lukas family is said to have had a vineyard on the southern slope, the so-called Lukase Berg , where they produced sparkling wine with the name Saarperle . Furthermore, there is said to have been the Reifenburg vineyard on the slope of the Reppersberg, below the Saarbrücken Clinic . However, the wine produced in these vineyards was almost exclusively consumed by the producing families.
