The University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (until 2008: University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt ) is a 1971 founded University of Applied Sciences (FH) in Bavaria with locations in Würzburg and Schweinfurt . The university has more than 40 bachelor's and master's degrees. The courses offered cover the fields of technology, economics and social sciences, computer science, design and language. With 9,159 enrolled students and approx. 217 professors, it is one of the largest universities for applied science in Bavaria.

history

The history of today's University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt goes back to 1807 and is linked to the previous institutions Balthasar-Neumann-Polytechnikum (emerged from the mechanical department of the district agricultural and trade school) of the district of Lower Franconia, the higher business school of the city of Würzburg and the Werkkunstschule of the city of Würzburg.

On August 1, 1971, the Würzburg-Schweinfurt University of Applied Sciences, founded on the basis of the Bavarian University of Applied Sciences Act, began operations with 1566 students in seven courses. Architecture, civil engineering, business administration and graphic design (today communication design) were offered at the Würzburg location, and electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and industrial engineering were offered at Schweinfurt.

Over time, the courses on offer have expanded to include the courses in social work (1972), plastics technology and surveying (1973), computer science (1975), care management (1995), business administration (1998), business informatics (2000), media management (2001), engineering informatics ( 2003), Logistics (2008) added.

From 1991 to 2000 she set up a new department in Aschaffenburg on behalf of the Ministry of Science. The business administration course was initially offered there, followed by the electrical engineering course from 1997. In 2000, what was then the Aschaffenburg department became an independent technical college.

On February 14, 2003, the then Minister of Science, Hans Zehetmeier, laid the foundation stone for an auditorium building costing almost 14.5 million euros for the Schweinfurt department. There are modern computer rooms in the basement of the building. A spacious auditorium on the ground floor offers space for events. The dean's offices, offices and the largest lecture hall in the building are located in a circle around this assembly room. On the first and second floors of the building, which is dominated by reinforced concrete and aluminum, there are air-conditioned and multimedia-equipped lecture halls.

After the inauguration by Science Minister Thomas Goppel on October 4, 2004, most of the teaching activities in the Schweinfurt department take place in the approximately 3000 square meter circular building. The older buildings at the Schweinfurt location were largely cleared. Extensive renovations have been taking place there since 2004.

In 2006, the university leased the naming rights of the university's largest lecture hall (Würzburg department) to Aldi- Süd. The FHWS lecture hall sponsorship by Aldi-Süd expired on March 14, 2017. In 2006, Sparkasse Würzburg made itself available as a “sponsor” of another lecture hall. A short time later, the following additional lecture hall sponsors were found:

In 2008 the name “University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt” was changed to “University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt”. The university has had its current name since May 1, 2011.

Overview

With 9,276 students (WS 2018/19), 217 professors (as of December 31, 2017), 28 teaching staff for special tasks and a further 380 employees, the university is the fourth largest university in Bavaria.

The range of courses offered by the ten faculties currently comprises 42 courses with bachelor and master degrees.

New buildings

Lecture hall and laboratory building

In Würzburg, a new lecture hall and laboratory building on Sanderheinrichsleitenweg was handed over to the university in September 2011.

In Schweinfurt, a new lecture hall building was handed over on the Grüner Markt in the north of the city ​​center in August 2011. The new building was built by SWG, cost around 9.6 million euros and was rented by the Free State of Bavaria for 12 years. As Campus 2 it offers space for 720 students, spread over seven lecture halls. However, Campus 2 on the Grüner Markt is to be closed again in 2020 so that the Schweinfurt department does not split into three locations, as the first large building is then to be completed on another new area (see following section: i-Campus Schweinfurt). The technical college then moves into the building on the Grüner Markt .

In Schweinfurt, the international university campus i-Campus Schweinfurt is being built on the site of the former US Ledward Barracks . The project is running as part of the internationalization of the university, with newly introduced English-language courses in Schweinfurt (since 2014) and Würzburg (since 2016), which are called FHWS i-Campus (see: FHWS i-Campus ).

In the final stage, 2,000 to 3,000 students from all over the world should be able to study bilingual (German and English) in the MINT subjects in bachelor courses in Schweinfurt . In addition, several university-related facilities are planned. A student village is currently under construction and already offers the first living space. Lectures exclusively in English, in the bachelor's twin courses in the fields of logistics and industrial engineering , began in the existing buildings on Schweinfurt Campus 1 in the winter semester 2014/15. In the winter semester 2020/21, lectures are to be held in the first completed building on the new one i-Campus area begin.

Student projects

Mainfranken Racing e. V.

The non-profit association Mainfranken Racing e.V. has existed since September 2006 (founded by students) . V. The students of Mainfranken Racing e. V. take part in the annual Formula Student Germany design competition, which is organized in Germany by the Association of German Engineers . Eight racing cars were built between 2007 and 2014. Work is currently underway to complete the MFNine.

Conceptathon 2019

On May 17, 2019, around 160 students from the Würzburg-Schweinfurt University of Applied Sciences from four courses (social work, health care management, e-commerce and master's degree in industrial engineering) and two cultures (48 participants were guest students from India) were included in Lohr am Main The 2019 conceptathon was carried out by Lohrer citizens, start-ups and resident companies.

30 mixed teams, worked in groups of 5–6 people at 4 locations in 12 hours on 10 topics and developed 30 new (digital) solution ideas for interesting questions and problems in the city of Lohr and the Main-Spessart region.

The aim of the event was to present an idea plus a prototype that had been worked out as specifically as possible within one day. In addition, the participants expected, among other things, an understanding of problems and ideas for solutions from other specialist areas and competence areas as a learning effect, as well as getting to know the basics of design thinking in a practical way. The overall cooperative project was carried out in English and organized by lecturers from the FHWS and the City of Lohr / Starthouse Spessart.

Memberships

The university is a member of MedienCampus Bayern , the umbrella organization for media education and training in Bavaria. Gabriele Goderbauer-Marchner , Professor of Media History and Media Policy in the Media Management degree program until 2010, was managing director of MedienCampus Bayern for many years until the end of 2009.

criticism

The FHWS renamed individual lecture halls according to the wishes of sponsors; so there are B. the lecture halls "Sparkasse", "Fresenius Medical Care" and the "Warema Renkhoff Aula". The chairman of the board of Warema Renkhoff SE is Angelique Renkhoff-Mücke, who is also a member of the FHWS University Council, which critics see as a conflict of interests.
