Ferenc Nagy [ ˈfɛrɛnʦ nɒɟ ] (born October 8, 1903 in Bisse , Kingdom of Hungary , † June 12, 1979 in Fairfax , Virginia , USA ) was a Hungarian politician and Prime Minister from February 4, 1946 to May 30, 1947 .

Life

Nagy was a member of parliament and a leading member of the Small Farmers' Party in inter-war Hungary. After the occupation of Hungary by the Red Army from 1944 to 1945, this party, led by Zoltán Tildy, won the elections to the National Assembly in November 1945. After the proclamation of the republic, Tildy was elected president in 1946. Ferenc Nagy became prime minister of a coalition government. With illegal means and the support of the Soviet Union , however, the communist USAP prevailed more and more and achieved Nagy's resignation in May 1947. Ferenc Nagy died in exile in the USA.
