history

The Femdale area was first settled by farmers in the 1800s. With the invention of the automobile and the development of the automotive industry in nearby Detroit, Ferndale's population grew rapidly in the early 19th century.

Ferndale was first registered as a village in 1918 and received town status on March 7, 1927. It became a satellite town for Detroit's workers. The strongest growth in residential construction was between 1920 and 1951. During the early 1950s there was a streetcar line from downtown Detroit to Pontiac .

These helped the northern suburbs of Detroit grow as dormitory cities as people could take the streetcar to shop or do work in Detroit.
