Localization of Lower Saxony in Germany

The Grafensundern telecommunications tower is a 60 m high transmission tower with a steel framework construction. Although the transmitter is located 10 km south of Osnabrück , it is also known as the Osnabrück transmitter because it belongs to the district . Because of its topographically favorable location, the southern Osnabrück region and the neighboring regions in particular can be better supplied with radio signals than is possible via the Schleptruper Egge and Schinkelturm (Osnabrück) transmitters .

History of the tower

In the 1960s , the directional radio tower was built on the Grafensundern mountain . It is a half-timbered transmission tower as it was often built during this period, for example on the Brunnenberg near Bad Rehburg and the Heidbrink near Lübbecke . In addition, during the Cold War, from 1961 onwards, the warning service in West Germany set up VHF broadcasting stations and radio relay points with antenna towers of this type.
The following information is known about the tower structure of those transmission systems: “The antenna tower of the broadcast transmission and radio link had a height of 30, 40 or 50 meters, depending on the geographical location. The tower was a lattice construction with an upper platform measuring 6.00 * 6.00 meters. The tower was equipped with an elevator winch with a swiveling boom for cables and antenna mirrors. The tower had a vertical VHF antenna, which was located on the platform, and 1 to 5 parabolic mirrors. "

At the Grafensundern radio tower, the upper platform is 40 m high. For mounting of the new VHF - dipole the central antenna support in the fall of 2015 has been extended to m. 5 This achieves a total height of 60 m.

The history of radio links goes back even further on the neighboring Dörenberg , which is connected by a ridge path . The first radio link in Germany from Iburg to Münster was established in 1937 via the former military radio station, which is now the location of a radio tower .
