The Floriade 2012 took place in the Venlo region from April 5th to October 7th. The central theme was: Be part of the theater in nature; get closer to the quality of life.

The following cities / municipalities applied to host:

The Floriade site on the A73 is 66 hectares in size, which is more than twice the size of the 2011 Federal Horticultural Show in Koblenz . The organizers are expecting 2.5 million visitors (for comparison: BUGA Koblenz 3.5 million), half of them from Germany (for example from the nearby Ruhr area ).

The Floriade Park consists of five themed areas, each separated by a forest:

  • "Relax & Heal" (relaxation and healing),
  • "Green Engine",
  • "Education and Innovation",
  • "Environment" as well as the
  • "World Show Stage", an open event arena.

The "Innovation Tower" at the entrance and the glass "Flora Villa" will continue to be used as representative company headquarters after the show.

Venlo is right on the German border; the surrounding villages and towns as well as the Schwalm-Nette nature park hope to 'get' some of the expected tourist flow. Niederrhein Tourismus offers Floriade excursions.

The site can be reached both by public transport and by car.

The Floriade 2012 made losses of around 9 million euros. The five municipalities involved have to bear these losses. The "Villa Flora" (since the Floriade office building) does not bring the rent level calculated at the time.
