assignment

The name, symbol and slogan "Common ground creates security" , of exercise Fränkischer Schild 86, were intended to emphasize the protective function of the armed forces, to express the solidarity with the civilian population in the training room and to indicate the mission of the exercising 12th Panzer Division.

scope

The exercise was designed as a one-party exercise, as the III. Corps was unable to do so without outside support. Franconian shield 86 took place under the leadership of the III. Corps , Koblenz , took place in southern Germany from September 18 to 26, 1986 . Of the 61,000 soldiers (other sources cite 60,000), 50,000 belonged to the German Armed Forces (including 12,000 reservists ), 8,000 US soldiers and 3,000 members of the French army . The 3rd US Infantry Division was only involved with the 1 / 64th Armored Regiment, since the 2 / 37th Armored Regiment of the 1st US Infantry Division had the M1 Abrams main battle tank in at the same time and therefore could not take part in the exercise. 14,000 wheeled vehicles, 3,500 tracked vehicles and 220 aircraft were involved. Schweinfurt , Würzburg , Walldürn , Hardheim , Waldstetten and Heilbronn were part of the practice room.

procedure

The deployment phase lasted from September 18 to 20, 1986, the combat phase from September 22 to 25, 1986 and ended with the retreat phase from September 25 to 26, 1986 with the final meeting. The exercise room formed a long corridor from the A8 Stuttgart-Karlsruhe motorway in the west to the inner-German border in the east. The area below Karlstadt - Gramschatz formed the V area. Bridges were built across the Neckar near Obrigheim , the 12th Panzer Division across the Rhine near Karlsruhe , across the Main near Fahr by Pioneer Command 3 and the Wern near Mühlhausen . Air landings occurred in the Neckargerach area. The paratrooper battalion 261 moved 25 Transall machines from Saarbrücken to Hessental and from there on to Künzelsau .

Federal Post Minister Christian Schwarz-Schilling paid a visit to the field post office in Hardheim . As part of the air force exercise " Cold Fire 86", 200 missions were flown daily to support the ground forces. The total maneuver damage amounted to a sum of 3.5 million DM . Eighteen civilians and 12 soldiers were killed in exercises the previous year.
