This article describes the state of the French Land Forces up to December 2015 . A restructuring was carried out in 2016 (→ French Army ).
organization
In addition to the usual army units , the French army also includes the marine infantry and the Foreign Legion . The marine infantry is comparable to the US Marine Corps to a limited extent , but does not have its own aircraft.
EMAT
The EMAT (Etat-major de l'Armée de terre- General Staff of the Army) is comparable to the Army Command of the German Army . The EMAT is divided into CFAT, COS and CFLT.
COS
The Commandement des opérations spéciales (COS) (Eng. "High Command for Special Operations ") with staff in Taverny is a cross- armed forces main command that leads all special units of the French military and other organizations subordinate to it. It is commanded either by a lieutenant general or a vice-admiral .
The units permanently subordinate to the COS include:
Commandement des forces spéciales terrestres (CFST) - (Army Special Operations Command) in Pau

Brigades
The brigades of the French Army are directly subordinate to the CFT and not, as is known in the German Army , to divisions . Others
- The term army appears historically in the names of the five armies, as major formations assigned to regions of France, of which ...
- The 1 ere armée , also Première Armée Française (German 1st Army of France) was re-established from the regular French B-Army in the final phase of World War II and demobilized in France in 1946 after fighting in Germany (8 brigades / divisions).
- The 2 e armée (German 2nd Army) fought as part of the army in the First and Second World Wars, in the latter it was disbanded.
- The Forces françaises en Allemagne (FFA) (translated French Armed Forces in Germany ) emerged from parts of the 1st Armée and occupied southwest Germany in the French zone as a victorious power within the framework of the four-power status . They were renamed Troupes Françaises d'Occupation en Allemagne in 1949 , Forces Françaises en Allemagne in 1950 , Forces françaises stationnées en Allemagne (FFSA) in 1993 and Forces françaises et éléments civils stationnés en Allemagne (FFECSA) in 1999 .

Note on naming
The translation of the standard names is not to be understood literally, but only serves to better understand the German reader. So z. B. "2e brigade blindée" with "2. Armored Brigade "literally translated, it is definitely what one understands in Germany by a tank brigade. Hence “2. Panzer Brigade ”.
