Franz Xaver Eugen Karl von Garnier (born April 28, 1842 in Nieder Rosen , † March 14, 1916 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Franz Xaver was the third oldest child of Karl Friedrich Theodor von Garnier (1811-1894) and his wife Emilie, born von Garnier (1814-1904). The Garnier family originally came from Savoy and can be traced back to the 15th century.

Military career

After his upbringing in his parents' house and attending grammar schools in Breslau , Neisse and Ratibor , Garnier joined the Leib Grenadier (1st Brandenburg Regiment No. 8) of the Prussian Army in Frankfurt (Oder ) as a three-year-old volunteer on July 1, 1859 ) a. There he was appointed Portepeefähnrich on May 23, 1860 and promoted to Second Lieutenant on January 22, 1861 . As such, he took part in the battles at Gitschin and Königgrätz in 1866 during the war against Austria . Garnier was promoted to lieutenant prime minister the following year . During the war against France Garnier was slightly injured in the battles at Spichern and Mars-la-Tour . He took part in the siege and the subsequent surrender of Metz and fought in the further course of the war at Beaune-la-Rolande , Orléans and Le Mans . His achievements were honored by being awarded the Iron Cross for both classes .

After the founding of the empire , Garnier rose to captain and chief of the 5th company on January 30, 1871 . After his promotion to major on December 12, 1882 , he was given a four-month vacation to travel through the Orient to Egypt and Syria as the companion of Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia . After his return to Germany, he initially served in his main regiment and was transferred to the 4th Guards Regiment on foot as battalion commander on October 14, 1884 . From April 8, 1889, he was employed as a regular staff officer in the 1st Baden Leib Grenadier Regiment No. 109 . In this position Garnier was promoted to lieutenant colonel on May 22, 1889 . With simultaneous promotion to Colonel , Garnier was given command of the 1st Hanseatic Infantry Regiment No. 75 on June 16, 1891 . On May 13, 1895, when he was promoted to major general, he was appointed commander of the 10th Infantry Brigade in Poznan .

In approval of his resignation request Garnier was put on May 20, 1897 with the statutory pension at disposal . On June 15, 1898 he received the character of Lieutenant General.

Garnier was a Knight of the Order of Malta .

His burial took place on his estate in Eckersdorf in Lower Silesia .

family

On July 14, 1877, he married Gertrud Baath. She was the daughter of the chief bailiff Eduard Baath and his wife Anna, née von Gansauge . Their son Hans Egon von Garnier (1894–1948) became a painter.
