Frédéric Chabot (born February 12, 1968 in Hebertville , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and current goalie coach .

Career

Frédéric Chabot was selected in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils in the tenth round at position 192. At that time he played in the Ligue de Hockey Junior AAA Quebec with the St. Foy Midget . From autumn 1986 he played in the Canadian junior league QMJHL with the Drummondville Voltigeurs with whom he made it to the final round of the Memorial Cup in 1987 . In 1988 he moved to the Canadian junior division in the Western Hockey League and played there for a year with the Moose Jaw Warriors and the Prince Albert Raiders .

The New Jersey Devils hadn't offered him a contract and so Chabot could choose which team he wanted to play for. In January 1990 he received a contract with the Montréal Canadiens . But the season he played with their farm teams Canadiens de Sherbrooke in the American Hockey League and the Fort Wayne Komets in the International Hockey League . 1990/91 he received three missions in the National Hockey League , but he only played one game.

Most of the other years he spent in the AHL with the Fredericton Canadiens or in the East Coast Hockey League with the Winston-Salem Thunderbirds . In the 1992 NHL Expansion Draft , he was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning , but transferred back to Montréal the next day. In the Expansion Draft, which was held so that new teams could fill their roster by choosing players from the existing teams, the Canadiens could ban a certain number of players they absolutely wanted to keep and Chabot was not one of them. The Montréal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup in 1993 , but Chabot couldn't add much to that, having only played 40 minutes in the NHL.

In January 1994 he was sent by the Canadiens in a transfer business to the Philadelphia Flyers for whose farm team Hershey Bears he mainly played. He was also used four times in the NHL, but mostly only when the team was already hopelessly behind. It was positive for him, however, at the Hershey Bears in the AHL, where he was awarded the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award as the best goalkeeper in the league at the end of the 1993/94 season .

Chabot's contract was not renewed in the summer of 1994, but he got a new one with the Florida Panthers . However, he never played for the Panthers in the NHL. Instead, he became a regular goalkeeper for the Cincinnati Cyclones in the IHL, for which he played two years. From 1996 he played for the Houston Eros in the IHL. In the summer of 1997 he received an NHL contract with the Los Angeles Kings , where he shared the role of Stéphane Fiset's back-up galie with Jamie Storr . Nevertheless, he continued to play for the Houston Eros, where he stayed until 2001.

But after a year his time in Los Angeles was over, as he was selected in the 1998 NHL Expansion Draft by the Nashville Predators . However, they released him and the Montréal Canadiens finally took him back into their home. With José Théodore he formed a back-up duo behind regular goalkeeper Jeff Hackett . In the summer of 1999, he even received a contract extension for two years, but his services were renounced from now on in the NHL. Instead, Chabot played his best season in the IHL with the Houston Eros and he was elected to the IHL First Allstar team at the end of the year and received the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the goalkeeper with the fewest goals.

In the summer of 2000 he was selected again in an expansion draft , this time by the Columbus Blue Jackets , for which he would never play. He played another year in Houston, but then the IHL was dissolved.

Chabot moved to Germany in the DEL , where he played for the Nürnberg Ice Tigers for three years . He was one of the best goalkeepers in the DEL at the time. In 2001/02 he had a goal against goal of 1.98 and a catch rate of 93.2 percent, in 2002/03 he even had a goal against goals of 1.81 and he held 94.5 percent of all shots. In both seasons he had the top scores in the league. In 2004 he moved to the Vienna Capitals in the Austrian Ice Hockey League , where he was able to win the championship with the team.

In 2005 he returned to Germany and played the 2005/06 season at Adler Mannheim and shared the missions with Ilpo Kauhanen . The season was not crowned with success as they missed the playoffs . Chabot's contract was not renewed in the summer of 2006.

After the end of his active career, he took over the goalkeeper training for the Austrian first division club EHC Black Wings Linz from the 2007/08 season .
