The Voltigeurs de Drummondville ( English Drummondville Voltigeurs ) are an ice hockey team of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League based in Drummondville in the Canadian province of Québec .

history

When the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec was founded in 1969, Drummondville already had an ice hockey team: The Drummondville Rangers, which ceased playing in 1973. Nine years later, exactly on January 16, 1982 , the city received a new franchise .

Naming

In February 1982 the team management made a public tender regarding the naming. Four rules should be followed: The name had to be French, have a connection with Drummondville, could also start with the letter "D" and had to refer to a historic event in the city's history.

350 suggestions were made, the most common being "Dauphins", "Dynamiques" and "Dragons". However, those responsible ultimately decided on the name "Voltigeurs", for which 21 entries voted.

General Frederick Georges Heriot's regiment fought the Americans in Ontario in 1812 . After the war, the regiment was liberated and the veterans were provided with land by the government, from which the settlement of Drummondville emerged in 1815.
