history

Freiwalde was first mentioned in 1345 as Frienwald . The place name means "settlement in the free forest (e)", this suggests that Freiwalde was a clearing settlement whose residents were exempt from tax. The first settlement of the place took place much earlier around the year 1200. Originally the population of Freiwalde lived mainly from agriculture , cattle breeding and forest use.

Historically, Freiwalde belonged to the Reichwalde aristocracy and came to the Lords of Bieberstein in 1377 . On April 26, 1414 Johann von Bieberstein sold the rule with the associated villages to the city of Luckau . For the year 1844 there were 266 inhabitants in Freiwalde who lived in 38 buildings. The inhabitants of the village, which at that time did not have its own church, went to the church in Kasel . The village church of Freiwalde was built in the Gothic style in 1871 . The parish Freiwalde is part of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia .

After the Congress of Vienna , the former Saxon Freiwalde came to the Kingdom of Prussia and was located in the district of Luckau in the administrative district of Frankfurt . On July 25, 1952, the community was assigned to the newly formed Lübben district in the Cottbus district . After the reunification , Freiwalde was in the Lübben district in Brandenburg . On October 26, 1992 the community joined the Unterspreewald office . After the district reform in Brandenburg on December 6, 1993 , Freiwalde finally came to the newly formed district of Dahme-Spreewald . On February 1, 2002 Freiwalde merged with the communities of Niewitz and Reichwalde to form the new Bersteland community. On January 1, 2013, the Unterspreewald office merged with the Golßener Land office , creating the Unterspreewald office .
