Ownership history and time until 1945

Schönwalde used to belong to the Reichwalde dominion . In 1414 Johann von Biberstein sold a large part of the village to the city of Luckau , for which Schönwalde was now a council village. Just four years later, the city sold part of the village for 51 stamps and 20 groschen of Bohemian money to the citizen Nikolaus Bychow. The farmers from the sold part of Schönwald had to cede their taxes in the form of oats to the new landlord. In 1508 the place was sold to the Eberhardt family, also from Luckau. At that time the place had 28 households , of which 18 were farmers and 10 were cossets . On May 15, 1526, the city council of Luckau bought Schönwalde back for 380 Rhenish guilders . After the Thirty Years War , Schönwalde was pledged to the city of Lübben until 1674. Since the goats kept by Schönwalder farmers in the forests around the place caused great damage, the farmers were only allowed to keep two goats from October 12, 1680.

Culture and sights

Village church

Front view of the Schönwalder village church

The village church in Schönwalde was built in the 17th century and consecrated in 1686. The building is a partially plastered half-timbered church from the Baroque period , as is more common in the Spreewald. The church has a horseshoe gallery and a pulpit altar from the late 17th century. The altar shows features of the late Renaissance due to its richness in jewelry. The building was renovated for the first time in the 1960s.

In the years 2009/2010, an expert report showed severe damage to the framework. In 2010, the renovation began in cooperation with the monument protection authority.

House Kulick

House Kulick

The Kulick house was built in 1666 on around 1000 acres of land and used as a grain distillery with an attached restaurant . After that, the owner of the building changed several times until it was finally bought by Gustav Broddak in 1893. In 1896 Broddak sold most of the land the house stood on, leaving all that was left to do with the economy.

No major changes have been made to the property since the year it was built, only the small hall was enlarged twice and finally demolished. In 1932 the house was extensively renovated and the Kulick family took over the building. This is where the name comes from. After the last daughter of the couple Frieda and Richard Kulick left the GDR in 1973, the building was sold to the state trading cooperative HO . After that, the economy was no longer doing well and was closed just a year after the takeover. At that time, at 308, it was the oldest inn in what was then the Lübben district.

After the closure, the Kulick building was used as a residential building and as a youth club until 1995 . After that, the building was empty until 2001. An application by the municipality to take over the house in municipal ownership was granted in 2000. Between 2001 and 2004 the Kulick house was restored using subsidies for around 900,000 euros.

The house Kulick is registered under the designation "Half-timbered house Dorfkrug" in the state monument list of the state Brandenburg as an architectural monument.
