Friedrich Wilhelm Philipp Julius von Wißmann (born January 23, 1828 in Potsdam , † January 12, 1909 in Brotzen ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

Friedrich was a member of the noble family von Wissmann . His parents were the district president of Bromberg Friedrich Christian Ferdinand von Wißmann (1787-1841) and his wife Wilhelmine, née Noeldechen (1787-1865).

Military career

Wissmann visited the Mary Magdalene School and then studied at the University of Breslau law . On October 1, 1848, he joined the 6th Jäger Battalion of the Prussian Army as a one-year volunteer . During this time, Wissmann decided to pursue an active career as an officer and was then transferred to the 22nd Infantry Regiment on April 1, 1849 . There he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich and participated in the same year with his regiment in the suppression of revolutionary unrest in Wroclaw . In mid-April 1850, Wißmann advanced to secondary lieutenant and from October 1853 to June 1856 attended the General War School . After a short period of service he was commanded from November 1, 1856 to May 1, 1858 as a teacher at the cadet house in Berlin . In this capacity, Wissmann became Prime Lieutenant on October 25, 1857 . After further assignments to the Topographical Department of the Great General Staff and to the Guards Artillery Regiment , he was captain of the 10th Company in Infantry Regiment No. 22 for a short time. On July 15, 1860, he was transferred to the Kaiser-Franz-Garde Grenadier Regiment and on December 12, 1860 the appointment as company commander . Wißmann fought with his company in 1866 during the war against Austria at Thrush and in the Battle of Königgrätz and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords , for his behavior .

On June 18, 1869, Wißmann rose to major and acted as commander of the 1st Battalion in the 2nd Guards Grenadier Landwehr Regiment on the occasion of the mobile situation in the war against France from July 19, 1870 to March 22, 1871. In this capacity he took part in the sieges of Strasbourg and Paris and in the battles on Mont Valérien and Cloyes. For his achievements, Wißmann received the Iron Cross, 2nd class.

After the peace agreement , on September 2, 1871, he was appointed commander of the 1st battalion in the Emperor Franz Garde Grenadier Regiment No. 2 . As commander of the Fusilier Battalion Wißmann was on March 4, 1873 in the Queen Augusta Grenadier Guards Regiment. 4 to Koblenz added and there on September 19, 1874 to lieutenant colonel , and on March 22, 1877 Colonel promoted. This was followed from July 14, 1877 onwards as commander of the 2nd Guards Regiment on foot . Wilhelm II recognized his achievements on January 18, 1889 by awarding the star to the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. On December 7th, 1889, Grand Duke Ludwig IV entrusted Wissmann with the Grand Cross of the Grand Ducal Hessian Order of Philip . On the occasion of the New Year's reception at the Kaiser’s house on January 1, 1890, he represented the sick commanding general of the XI. Army Corps Wilhelm von Grolmann .
