Live and act

Fritz Wrampe was born to Protestant parents in Munich in 1893. His father was a merchant and came from a Baltic family, his mother came from Augsburg. In November 1914 he began training with the painter Adolf Hengeler at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . Later he also had lessons from Hugo von Habermann and Heinrich von Zügel . From 1917 to 1923 he was a member of Hermann Hahn's sculpting class at the academy . There were u. a. Toni Stadler and Ludwig Kasper his fellow students.

Wrampe was a member of the Munich New Secession from 1921 . Together with the sculptor Ludwig Kasper and the painter Florian Bosch (1900–1972), he had a studio in the former Schwanthaler Museum from 1923 to 1928 . From 1928 he worked as a guest in Heinrich Kirchner's studio . In 1931 he went on a study trip to Italy with him and the painter Max Schöfer (1895–1966) . This was made possible by an academy scholarship and led to Assisi, Verona, Perugia, Rome, Naples and Pompeii.

Fritz Wrampe suffered from nervous stomach problems and depression . Three times in his career (the one time after the death of his father) he felt compelled to destroy all available work and to give away his studio equipment. Only works that he sold early or that were created in his last time have survived. In 1934 he was shot by his lover. The sculptor Bernhard Bleeker gave his funeral speech.

Wrampe's artistic endeavors become clear in this quote: The natural form must be reduced and yet all of nature must remain in the sculpture. Some of his works were confiscated from the National Socialist regime by the Reich Propaganda Ministry as " degenerate art ", for example in August 1937 from the Munich State Gallery. Heinrich Kirchner, Wrampes' artist friend, left his widow to manage the entire artistic estate.

Fritz Wrampe left more than 1,100 drawings. Twelve of his prints are in the collection of Alfred Kubin in the Upper Austrian State Museum in Linz . Eleven of his lithographs can be found in Kubin-Haus Zwickledt : Christ's feet washing , tarpaulin wagon with horse , naked man with two horses , men with horses , lady in evening dress with two elephants , roe deer , panthers behind bars , in the zoo , baboons , horses and buffalo .

Appreciation

  • Hans Eckstein : "One of the most original talents was undoubtedly the late Fritz Wrampe, for whom it is difficult to say whether his drawings and lithographs or his sculptures are the more precious legacy."
  • Waldemar Grzimek : “Wrampe [...] complements the differentiated head and figure modeling with grotesque animal compositions. In his Reclining Antilope, this timelessly beautiful sculpture, he finds lively relationships between surfaces and contrasts of forms, which herald the coming styles. "
  • Ernst Holzinger : "The last pictures have become completely pure and perfect in their three-dimensional imagination and realization, and the last drawings have achieved true graphic mastery."
