Football Women's World Cup 2011 / Equatorial Guinea

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about the Equatorial Guinean national soccer team at the 2011 Women's World Cup in Germany. In March 2011, Equatorial Guinea achieved its best position to date with 61st place in the FIFA world rankings, but was still the weakest World Cup participant. Equatorial Guinea took part in a World Cup for the first time. The greatest success to date is winning the 2008 African Football Championship for women . Equatorial Guinea had only played 26 internationals before the World Cup, the first in 2002. With the exception of Nigeria , Equatorial Guinea had never played against any of the other World Cup participants and - with the exception of a preparation match against Luxembourg - never outside of Africa. Equatorial Guinea is the smallest country (approx. 28,000 km²) that has ever participated in a women's world championship and also has the lowest population (651,000) of all previous participants. It replaces Taiwan (1991 participant) as the smallest and New Zealand as the most populous participating country.

qualification

Equatorial Guinea qualified for the finals by beating hosts South Africa in the semi-finals of the 2010 African Cup of Nations. The final was lost against the also qualified record champions Nigeria . The most successful goalscorer for Equatorial Guinea was Simpore Salimata with 3 goals, two of which she scored in the semi-finals against South Africa. After qualifying, Ghana and South Africa charged that Equatorial Guinea had used men in the tournament.

Group games

In the first game of Group D, World Cup newcomers Equatorial Guinea met ex world champions Norway in their first competitive game outside Africa and their first competitive game against a non-African team . The favored Norwegians started furiously, Haavi hit the post in the second minute . Other opportunities soon followed, but they did not lead to a goal either. After a quarter of an hour, the newcomer to the World Cup made the game more open and had many good chances, which, however, also lacked precision. In particular , Añonma , who plays for Jena in the Bundesliga, repeatedly presented the Norwegians with problems, only when it came to the conclusion it was a problem. The Northern Europeans were also overweight at the beginning of the second half and only after 20 minutes did the Africans get better into the game. When they started to have calf cramps , it seemed as if Norway were in better condition, but an open blow exchange continued with chances on both sides. Haavi, the youngest player on the field, used one of these chances to score a 1-0 winner for Norway in the 84th minute. After that, the Africans tried to equalize, but the more experienced Norwegians brought the narrow lead over time.

In their second game, the Africans met Asian champions Australia for the first time . From the start, Australia put the World Cup newcomer under pressure and in the 8th minute Leena Khamis was able to dust off when goalkeeper Miriam could not hold the ball. In the ensuing period Australia pushed for the 2-0, and the Africans were lucky that the Hungarian referee Gyöngyi Gaál failed to see Bruna picking up a ball that had ricocheted off the post in the 16th minute . The 1-1 equalizer came as a complete surprise when Genoveva Añonma was able to take the ball from Australian defender Servet Uzunlar and play the Australian goalkeeper. In the second half, the Africans quickly fell 3-1 behind with goals from Emily van Egmond (48th) and Lisa De Vanna (51st). After that Australia administered the game and the game of the World Cup newcomer became "Nigerian"; the Africans, who had only committed three fouls against Norway, received three yellow cards . It was not until the 70th minute that Equatorial Guinea had another chance to score when Añonma penetrated the Australian penalty area and finished the goal. The Australian goalkeeper was able to deflect the ball to the corner - but the referee did not give it. Shortly before the end it got exciting again when Añonma again took the ball from Uzunlar and scored the 2: 3 goal. Australia then achieved this result over time. With Norway losing to Brazil, Equatorial Guinea now had no chance of making it to the quarter-finals, even if they had won their last group game against runners-up Brazil .

At the first meeting with Brazil, the Africans were able to avoid a deficit until the 49th minute, as Bruna made the Guido against world footballer Marta and followed her every step - even when Marta tried to talk to her coach - which made her visibly annoyed. Then Érika scored the 1-0 with a fine individual performance, the 2-0 followed in the 54th minute by Cristiane after preparatory work by Marta. When Marta was fouled in the penalty area in the final minute, Cristiane converted the penalty. With this defeat, the newcomer was eliminated from bottom of the group without winning points.
