Günter Standl (* 1963 in Teisendorf ) is a German photographer and artist .

life and work

Günter Standl comes from the old Standl family from the Salzburg region. His brother is the painter Hermann Standl . The National Geographic Magazine , which he read in his childhood when he was twelve, and the associated first photographic experiments , were decisive for his decision to become a photographer. In 1991 he took lessons from Eduardo Gil in reportage photography at the École nationale supérieure de la photographie in Arles . A short time later he dared to take the step into self-employment. This is followed by an illustrated book about Vienna for Bucher Verlag and worldwide reports for the travel magazine GLOBO . Subsequently, commissioned photographs are created, u. a. for Steigenberger , Dorma , Commerzbank , Daimler Chrysler , Volkswagen , Microsoft or Siemens . Magazines such as Merian , ADAC Spezial , GEO Saison , GQ , Spiegel , Brigitte , Capital , Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin , Die Zeit , Focus and Abenteuer & Reisen also commission him . He is a member of the LAIF photo agency. At the same time, Günter Standl devotes himself to artistic photography.

Almost as a leitmotif , he tries to capture the relationship between object and environment with his camera. In the STOP! LOOK! For example, he elevates coin-operated telescopes to a work of art by decontextualizing them and setting them in scene with the help of perspective and surface effects. They are semantically repurposed. The former, artistically simple everyday object is stripped of the mantle of the banal and instead given a sculptural aura. To this end he remarked to the magazine of the Süddeutsche Zeitung : " When the people were gone, the telescope became a sculpture ." The impetus for his exploration of telescopes was a trip to Bangkok . Since then, he has repeatedly photographed coin-operated telescopes as such on his travels around the world, especially when the crowd of tourists has drained and he can rediscover the object in a new context. In his series OFFSIGHTS , he proceeds in a similar methodical manner . With one eye for the at first glance inconspicuous, but nevertheless picture-worthy object on the edges of tourist paradises, he went as a silent observer on a tour d'horizon to Namibia , Brazil , Oman , Thailand , Spain , Australia , Italy , South Africa , Greenland , the Caribbean , Turkey and the Maldives . Here, too, the general characteristics of Günter Standl's factual style are a strict image structure with an often pronounced perspective effect, a formal language based on basic geometric shapes, an overly sharp drawing and an often subdued color scheme . Die Zeit compared these recordings with those of Martin Parr , but emphasized that Standl, in contrast to Parr, gives the pictures a melancholy touch instead of putting people in the foreground, as we know from Martin Parr.
