Garrard Sliger "Buster" Ramsey (born March 16, 1920 in Townsend , Tennessee , USA , † September 16, 2007 in Chattanooga , Tennessee) was an American football player and coach. Among other things, he played as a guard in the National Football League (NFL) for the Chicago Cardinals .

Buster Ramsey was the son of a Methodist - preacher born in Tennessee. He attended in Knoxville , the high school where he played American football, as well as the athlete worked. In 1937 he won the national high school championship in American football with his team. His team had defeated a school team from Florida 37-0.
Player career
College career
Garrard Ramsey studied from 1939 to 1942 at the College of William & Mary and played for the "William & Mary Tribe" college football on the position of a guard. During his four playing years, his team won 29 games, lost seven and drew three times. Ramsey was chosen twice as a selection player in his league and in 1942 for the All American . It was the first game in his college to be voted All American.
Professional career
Ramsey was 124th in the 14th round in 1943 by the Cardinals. Due to his military service in the US Navy , he could not begin his professional career until 1946. The team was coached by Jimmy Conzelman , who already used Ramsey in his rookie year as a starter on the position of right guard. In 1947 Ramsey was able to win the NFL championship with his team . In the final, the Philadelphia Eagles were defeated 28:21. Ramsey managed to intercept a pass from quarterback Tommy Thompson in this game and carry the ball over a distance of 41 yards towards the end zone of the Eagles. In 1948 the Cardinals played an outstanding season and won eleven of their 12 games. In the final this time, however, the Eagles prevailed 7-0.
After the 1951 season, Buster Ramsey ended his playing career.
Coaching career
Immediately after his playing career, Ramsey joined the Detroit Lions as an assistant coach to Buddy Parker . Ramsey was responsible for the defense of the team and was able to significantly improve the defense work of his team. Ramsey was one of the first coaches who used his linebackers to put pressure on the opposing quarterback with a lightning bolt . Players like Yale Lary and Jack Christiansen , who are now members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame , were shaped into top players by him.
In 1952 and 1953, the Detroit team won the NFL championship. In 1952 the Cleveland Browns were defeated 17: 7, a year later the Cleveland team had to admit defeat 17:16. In 1954, however, the Lions suffered a significant 56:10 defeat against the Browns in the final. After the 1957 season, Ramsey celebrated his fourth NFL championship with the Lions. For the fourth time, the Browns were the final opponent and this time the Lions managed a clear 59:14 victory. The Ramsey defense showed an outstanding performance and was able to intercept five passes.
After the 1959 season, Ramsey moved as head coach to the Buffalo Bills , which were part of the newly formed American Football League (AFL). The success of the Bills, however, failed and Ramsey was released in 1961. Until 1964, Ramsey was an assistant coach to Buddy Parker at the Pittsburgh Steelers . Ramsey then finally withdrew from the NFL.
Honors
Garrard Ramsey has been voted All-Pro five times . He is a member of the NFL 1940s All-Decade Team , the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame since 1974, and the College Football Hall of Fame since 1978 .
Off the NFL
Buster Ramsey's brother, Knox Ramsey , was also a professional footballer and played for the Washington Redskins at times . Buster Ramsey ran a farm after his career and died of pneumonia and is buried in Grantville Cemetery, Maryville .
