Georg Paskuda (born January 7, 1926 in Ratibor , Upper Silesia , † February 10, 2001 in Munich ) was a German opera singer with a tenor voice .

Life

Paskuda made his debut as an opera singer in 1951. He then had permanent engagements at the Lübeck City Theater (1952–1954), the Bielefeld City Theater (1954–1955), the Wuppertal Opera House (1955–1958) and the Wiesbaden State Theater (1958–1961). In 1961 Paskuda moved to the Bavarian State Opera in Munich as a "lyric tenor" , of which he remained until he left the stage. In 1961 he had great success in Munich in the title role of the opera Don Carlos . There he sang in 1963 at the Munich Opera Festival alongside Lisa della Casa and Anneliese Rothenberger under the musical direction of Joseph Keilberth the role of the officer Matteo in Arabella , which was one of his great highlights. In 1965 he was the officer in Cardillac at the side of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in the title role. In 1965 he also sang Cassio in Otello . In 1967 he took on the role of Dr. Cajus in a new production by Falstaff , again at the side of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. In 1970 he sang Andres in Wozzeck in Munich under Carlos Kleiber .

Paskuda was also considered a specialist in contemporary and modern music of the 20th century. He sang works by Paul Hindemith , Alban Berg and Carl Orff , among others . He participated in several opera premieres in Munich, including 1969 in The Story of Aucassin and Nicoletta by Günter Bialas , 1978 as Duke of Cornwall in Lear by Aribert Reimann and 1986 Belshazar by Volker David Kirchner . Later in his career, Paskuda took on numerous character roles and Comprimario roles at the Munich State Opera , including the steward of the Feldmarschallin in Der Rosenkavalier (1973ff.), The young servant in Elektra (1977), Schmidt in Werther (1978), Balthasar Zorn in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (1979), Parpignol in La Bohème (1983) and 4th Jude in Salome (1987). Paskuda still performed in Munich until the end of the 1994/1995 season.

In 1959 Paskuda sang for the first time at the Bayreuth Festival . He made his debut there as a helmsman in Der Fliegende Holländer . He also sang this role in 1960, 1961 and 1970. Until 1971 he was a permanent member of the Bayreuth Festival. There he took over the lyrical tenor roles and character roles in Richard Wagner's musical dramas , but also smaller roles: in 1960 he sang Froh in Das Rheingold , 1970–1971 he sang the mime in Der Ring des Nibelungen . He also appeared in Bayreuth as Heinrich the Schreiber in Tannhäuser (1961/1962), as Kunz Vogelgesang and Augustin Moser in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (1959, 1961 and 1970), as well as Knappe and First Grail Knight in Parsifal (1959, 1961–1963 ) on.

Paskuda also made guest appearances at the Vienna State Opera . There he made his debut in October 1962 as a singer in the opera Der Rosenkavalier . He later sang Tamino in Die Zauberflöte (1963) and Matteo (1969) in Vienna . As Count Elemer in Arabella , he performed alongside Melitta Muszely in May 1966 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice . A live recording of this performance was later released on CD.

Paskuda also gave guest appearances at the Grand Opéra Paris (1960), at the Opera House of Monte Carlo (1963 as a singer in the opera Der Rosenkavalier ) and at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels (1966, 1989). In 1971 he sang the mime at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in a new production of Richard Wagner's Das Rheingold .

repertoire

Paskuda had a wide repertoire. His voice could not be clearly assigned to any role subject. At the beginning of his career, Paskuda often sang the lyric tenor subject. At the same time he took over the subject of the youthful hero tenor, the tenoral intermediate subject and roles for character tenor . In the course of his career he sang roles by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Christoph Willibald Gluck , Richard Wagner , Giuseppe Verdi , Giacomo Puccini , Richard Strauss and Hans Pfitzner, among others .

Audio documents

There are relatively few original recordings documenting Paskuda's voice. However, there are numerous live recordings of operas and radio recordings . Georg Paskuda's musical oeuvre, passed down through radio recordings and live recordings, has been published largely on CD in recent years, partly in special live documentations.
