Georg Wetzell (born March 5, 1869 in Nieder-Erlenbach ; † January 3, 1947 in Augsburg ) was a German infantry general and from 1926 to 1927 chief of the Reichswehr troop office .

Life

Wetzell joined the Pioneer Battalion No. 16 of the Prussian Army in Metz on October 1, 1889 as a flag junior and was promoted to second lieutenant until the end of August 1891 . As such, he was transferred to the Pioneer Battalion No. 20, also stationed in Metz, on October 1, 1893, and attended the United Artillery and Engineering School for further training . In 1898 he came to Infantry Regiment No. 144 , in which he was promoted to prime lieutenant. From 1901 to 1903 Wetzell attended the War Academy and was then assigned to the General Staff .

As a major (since October 1, 1912) he was appointed to the General Staff of the III on March 22, 1913 as first general staff officer . Army Corps transferred. There he remained after the outbreak of World War I and from March 9, 1915, he was Chief of the General Staff. In August 1916 he was transferred to the Supreme Army Command as head of the operations department of the Chief of the General Staff of the Field Army. For his achievements in this function during the campaign against Italy, he was awarded the oak leaves for Pour le Mérite on November 1, 1917 (the latter he wore since December 11, 1916). He was appointed chief of staff of the 5th Army at the end of September 1918. After the end of the war, Wetzell served temporarily as Chief of the General Staff of the XVIII. Army Corps and was accepted into the Reichswehr .

In 1921 he was appointed to the rank of colonel (since 1920) inspector of the intelligence service (In 7) in the Reichswehr Ministry and was promoted to major general on December 1, 1923 . On February 1, 1926 he was appointed Chief of the Troop Office and on February 1, 1927 promoted to Lieutenant General. In April 1927 he was relieved of his post and transferred to the staff of Group Command I in Berlin. On October 31, 1927, he was adopted into retirement and was given the character of General of the Infantry. After his departure, he founded the military magazine Deutsche Wehr .

From 1930 Wetzell worked for four years as a general military advisor to the Chinese government in Nanking (cf. Sino-German Cooperation (1911–1941) ). He then worked from October 1, 1934 until the paper was discontinued in December 1942 as editor-in-chief of the military weekly paper . He also worked as the author and editor of several military-political writings.
