action

Rachel Wilcox, 17, just graduated from high school, lives with her mother, Lilly, and stepfather in San Francisco . She leads a wild life and gives her mother numerous problems with upbringing. She is therefore sent to Hull, a small town in Idaho , to live with her grandmother Georgia for the summer .

On her first day, Rachel meets Harlan, a young Mormon who, with his strict and unshakable faith, has taken on an important role in Rachel's new life. Georgia lives by strict rules. She doesn't accept blasphemy and makes Rachel go to work. After an initial refusal, Rachel helps Simon, a former friend of her mother's, local vet . He treats both animals and people, which Rachel doesn't like at first.

During the festival, July 4 tells Rachel Simon, who has lost his wife and son in a car accident that she's since the age of twelve by her stepfather, the lawyer by profession, abused had been. He only stopped when Rachel's friends threatened him. As a result of these experiences, Rachel has difficulty establishing a normal relationship with a man. She can only open up to Harlan. But Harlan already has a girlfriend, so their relationship with each other is not that straightforward. Meanwhile, Simon turned to Georgia, who informed Lilly. However, this does not seem to have been the intention of the unsettled Rachel, as she ignorantly explains to Simon that she only thought it up provocatively in conversation. For some time it remains unclear what is truth and a lie. Rachel's stepfather denies the act and her mother can't decide which side she's on. Rachel then threatens her stepfather in private, he should make her mother happy, then she would not say anything and not sue him.

The mother believes Rachel when she tells her she lied about attention and drives her husband back to San Francisco . In the car, however, she realizes that Rachel was telling the truth and immediately gets out of the car. After Georgia persuades her to do so, Rachel is on her way to see her mother with Harlan, Simon and Georgia to tell her the real truth. Mother and daughter both embrace. Harlan confesses to Georgia that he loves her granddaughter and tells her that he wants to marry her after his two years of mission.

Reviews

John Anderson wrote in Variety magazine on May 8, 2007 that the film looked like Jerry Lewis had made a screenplay by Ingmar Bergman . The topic is "gloomy", the relationships shown are "rough", the worldview is "bleak", the film is a "defaced drama" ("misshapen dramedy").

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that while the film wasn't Garry Marshall's worst directorial work, it was a "limp misfire." His main problem is not that he addresses many issues, but that he does it without "emotional honesty". Lindsay Lohan appears credible in her role as the promiscuous girl. In future, one would remember in connection with the film that the head of the Morgan Creek production company , James G. Robinson, criticized Lindsay Lohan for her poor work ethic.
