Germán Valera Karabinaite (born March 16, 2002 in Murcia ) is a Spanish football player of Lithuanian descent who is under contract with the first division club Atlético Madrid . The winger is a former Spanish U18 international .

Career

In Murcia born Germán Valera played in the youth department of the Villarreal before the summer 2018 the young to Atlético Madrid joined. There he played in his first 2018/19 season with the U19 team in the UEFA Youth League . For the season 2019/20 he was in the reserve team Atlético Madrid B transported. He made his debut in the third-highest Spanish division on August 24, 2019 (1st matchday) in a 2-1 away win against Club Marino de Luanco , when he came on for Cedric Teguia in the 66th minute of the game . He quickly established himself as a rotation player and on October 13 (8th matchday) he scored his first league goal in a 3-0 home win against FC Coruxo . Good performances enabled Valera to make his debut in the first team on January 4, 2020 (19th matchday) at the age of 17, when he came on for João Félix in the 87th minute of the 2-1 home win against the UD Levante . A short time later, he sustained a shoulder injury and after an arthroscopic operation, he was sidelined until league operations were interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic . In total, he completed 15 league games for the reserve this season, in which he scored a goal.

National team

In February 2018, Germán Valera played three international matches for the Spanish U16 national team . Since October 2017 he has played for the U17s and led this selection as captain through the qualification for the finals of the U17 European Championship 2019 in Ireland . There he played four of the five games and failed with the Furia Roja in the final against the Netherlands . His last tournament in this age group was the U17 World Cup in Brazil in 2019. There he played four of the five games in Spain as captain and scored three goals in these appearances. With a 1: 6 defeat against France he was eliminated with Spain in the quarter-finals.

Germán Valera has been working for the U18s since September 2019 .
