Guild Brewery Hanover

The guild Brauerei GmbH is a traditional large brewery and the oldest company in Hannover . The history of Brauergilde began in 1526 with the brewery of Cord Broyhan . It has belonged to TCB Beteiligungsgesellschaft since January 1, 2016 . At the end of November 2019, the brewery was split into four companies.

Brewery Guild Hanover

On May 31, 1526, Cord Broyhan invented his new top-fermented beer named after him , which he brewed in the Broyhanhaus from 1537 . An economic boom followed for the city. In 1546 the brewers united to form a guild , which in the same year first coined the “Broyhan-Taler”, a copper brewing and tax symbol.

In 1609, the city council recognized the brewers' guild as an independent legal entity that watched over the rights and obligations of brewers. The guild was an association of landowners on whose land the brewing rights lay. In the 17th century, this was around 320 properties with brewing rights. In 1745, around 105 authorized brewers founded a partnership that ensured consistently good beer quality. At the end of the 18th century, the brewing guild built a brewery in Köbelingerstraße, in which Broyhan beer was brewed until 1919.

In the 19th century, bottom-fermented lager beers such as " Pilsener Bier " were developed, which had a longer shelf life and could therefore also be traded nationwide. As a result, large breweries gradually emerged across Germany (annual production from 100,000 hectoliters). In 1868 the brewing guild lost its sales monopoly in Hanover and it changed from an association organized as a cooperative into a company. In 1870, the Hanover Brewery Guild took over today's property on Hildesheimer Strasse near the Maschsee . A factory building in the neo-Gothic style was built on this by 1875 .

In 1917, the Städtische Lager-Brauerei formed a consortium together with the breweries Vereinsbrauerei Herrenhausen and Lindener Aktien-Brauerei, also based in Hanover , through which a - successful - takeover offer was submitted to the shareholders of the Germania brewery .

In 1925 the Gilde acquired the majority of the share capital of the Lindener Aktien-Brauerei and merged with it in 1968 to form Lindener Gilde-Bräu AG . In 1970 the brewery building on Hildesheimer Strasse was converted and expanded into one of the most modern breweries in the world. Up until the 1990s, catering businesses were supplied with horse-drawn vehicles in individual cases to maintain tradition.

During the Second World War , one of several public air-raid shelters in the southern part of the city was set up in the building of the old brewery to protect the people who remained in the city from the bombs during the air raids on Hanover . In the course of the war, however, about 75% of the factory facilities were destroyed.

In 1985 the brewery expanded its activities beyond the Hanover region and took over the majority of the shares in Hofbrauhaus Wolters AG in Braunschweig . In 1988 the name was reduced to Gilde Brauerei AG .

In 1989, the production of the cult brand began Bölkstoff the inventor of the comic book character after an argument Werner with the Flensburger Brauerei whose swing top -Pils got through him cult status.

In 1990 Gilde took over Hasseröder Brauerei GmbH in Wernigerode (Saxony-Anhalt) and expanded it into one of the most modern breweries in Europe. In 1992, the majority of the Brauhaus Wülfel AG was taken over in Hanover and in 1997 the brewery in Linden ( Lindener Spezial ) was closed. In 2000 the Gilde Group was one of the "Top Ten" in the German brewery industry. It not only included breweries, but also the Malzfabrik Langkopf GmbH in Peine , which had already been taken over by the Lindener Aktienbrauerei in 1909.

The Art Nouveau depiction on the brewery's kettle house in Hanover was used to design the platforms of the Altenbekener Damm underground station there .

Guild as part of Interbrew and AB-InBev

The Belgian Interbrew group (“Stella Artois”) took over the Altbier brewery in Diebels in 2001 and the Bremen global brand Beck's in 2002 and merged them into Interbrew Germany. On January 1, 2003, the group also took over Gilde Brauerei AG .

In autumn 2004 Interbrew merged (after taking over the Munich Spaten-Löwenbräu Group and Dinkelacker-Schwabenbräu in Stuttgart on October 1) with the Brazilian AmBev group to form the world's largest brewery group, InBev . Interbrew Germany was renamed InBev Germany on July 1, 2005.

InBev also gave priority to the production and promotion of national beer brands in Hanover and increasingly withdrew traditional Hanover brands from the market. The Wilkenburger brand was discontinued in 2004 and the Bölkstoff brand was sold to the Flensburg brewery . The traditional Braunschweig brewery Hofbrauhaus Wolters , which has been part of the Gilde Group for 20 years, was even supposed to be closed completely on December 31, 2005, but was sold to four managers through a rescue plan with the support of the city of Braunschweig and has been working as an independent brewery since October 2006. The Langkopf malt factory was sold to the Rudolf Meyer Group in Peine in 2005.

The Inbev Group has been cutting back production in Hanover since 2009. In 2014 it had an annual production of around 150,000 hectoliters of beer with 70 employees.

Takeover by TCB

In October 2015, the parent company announced that it would sell the Gilde-Brauerei to TCB Beteiligungsgesellschaft at the turn of the year . The takeover took place on January 1, 2016. The stock corporation was converted into a GmbH. Already in the first year after the takeover, the output could be increased from 150,000 hl to 650,000 hl. In 2017 the output was already 800,000 hl. Of this, however, only 145,000 hl are accounted for by the Gilde and Lindener brands, the rest of the production is accounted for by private labels for supermarkets, as well as licensed production for grocery chains and Efes beer for Germany.

The brewery's slogan is: "Das Gilden - Brewed since 1546" This sentence is a play on words from the name and the word "gilden" (or "güldet") used in the regional vernacular for "valid" and is intended to represent reliability.

In the course of a wage dispute, the Gilde Brewery was split up into four companies on the night of November 29, 2019 by the management of its parent company, TCB Beverages in Frankfurt / Oder. Employees and the works council saw this as an attempt to slow down the ongoing labor dispute.
