Girls and tanks: the film (2015)

Girls und Panzer ( Japanese ガ ー ル ズ & パ ン ツ ァ ー , Gāruzu ando Pantsā , Eng . "Girls and Panzer") is an anime and manga series from 2012. Since then, a total of one television series, one OVA series , three mangas and one Novel. A movie was released in November 2015.

action

The action takes place in a fictional world in which military heavy industry has been faded into everyday civil life for economic reasons. It has been the custom in Japan for decades that - in an extreme application of the term " school ship " - adolescent girls and boys spend their school days on converted aircraft carriers that have been transformed into independent floating communities that offer all the comforts of a small town on land.

In this world it is a traditional martial art for girls to fight out competitions with tanks from the Second World War , this sport being known as the "way of the tank" ( 戦 車道 , Senshadō ). These competitions also take place on a national and international level, with different schools competing against each other for the championship under certain rules - including achieving victory by eliminating a designated flag tank. Although live ammunition is used, the tanks involved are provided with an additional protective carbon coating for the interior and a computer that analyzes the impact of a hit and, in the event of a correspondingly high level of simulated damage, raises a white flag that signals the defeat of the tank concerned.

The main character of the series is Miho Nishizumi, who comes from a family with a long Senshadō tradition. After she was responsible for their defeat in the final at her old school after a nine-year winning streak, she swears by the Senshadō and switched to the Ōarai Prefecture Girls' School ( 県 立 大 洗 女子 学園 , Kenritsu Ōarai Joshi Gakuen ) , since this has been since has not operated a Senshadō program for several years. Unfortunately for her, the student council decides to reintroduce this discipline that very year, and under the threat of otherwise expelling her from school, Miho, the only girl with Senshadō experience, has to reluctantly participate. With the help of her friends, she slowly finds joy in tank driving again and leads Ōarai through the national Senshadō championship.

It later emerges that this tournament is about more than just prestige: Because Ōarai is no longer regarded as productive by the Ministry of Education , the girls' school is about to close, and only a victory in the popular Senshadō could give it the general respect that she needs to continue to exist. Thus, the hopes of the student council and the entire student body now rest on the shoulders of Miho and her Senshadō team.

Characters

Ōarai Prefecture Girls School

The teams of the Ōarai Prefecture Girls' School, apart from the team of the protagonists, are made up of girls with the same, sometimes very specific interests, which leads to an abundance of insider jokes within the individual teams and in some cases also in their expression expresses. Individual characters are also characterized by special, strongly pronounced personalities and peculiarities.

Frogfish team

The " frogfish team" ( あ ん こ う チ ー ム , ankō chīmu ), who drive a Panzerkampfwagen IV (first in version D up to the quarter-finals against the Anzio high school, then in the semifinals against the Pravda high school in version F2 and in the final against the Black Forest Summit Girls' School in version H with armored aprons) , is formed by the five protagonists of the series:

Miho Nishizumi ( 西 住 み ほ )
A new student at Ōarai Prefecture Middle School and the tank commander. She is descended from the famous Nishizumi family, who practiced a long Senshadō tradition, but she suffered greatly from her strict, imperious mother, who preached iron discipline to her daughters during their Senshadō battles. However, after she was responsible for the defeat of her school at the last tournament because she impulsively helped some teammates whose tanks had slipped into a raging river, she wanted to withdraw from Senshadō in shame. After she was forcibly drawn into the Senshadō team in Ōarai, she found joy in driving tanks again because of the much more relaxed atmosphere in her new team and the support of her new friends. Despite her initial uncertainty, she made a name for herself as a capable commander who knew how to outmaneuver her opponents even with the technical inferiority of her team, and was promoted to general commander of the befarai Senshadō team after the first competition with St. Gloriana.
Saori Takebe ( 武 部 沙織 )
An orange-haired girl and radio operator of the tank, who is always looking for a good marriage match. The fact that she is still single is expanded into a running gag in the series. Because of her sociability, she becomes one of Miho's first friends in Ōarai and is responsible for the radio in the tank.
Hana Isuzu ( 五十鈴 華 )
A long-haired girl with a calm and friendly personality and a tank gunner . She comes from a family with a long ikebana tradition and is one of Miho's first friends in Ōarai.
Yukari Akiyama ( 秋山 優 花 里 )
A girl from a hairdressing family who has been passionate about tanks and militaria since childhood , but this has meant that she had no friends for a long time. After Miho invited her to her team, she worships Miho and her other teammates and addresses them as -dono as a token of her respect . She later became an honorary member of the history club under the nickname "Guderian" (after Heinz Guderian ). It acts as a charging shooter of the tank and also takes off the armor tasks such as reconnaissance of enemy positions was. She is prepared for every situation and often carries military equipment such as a compass and field harness with her.
Mako Reizei ( 冷泉 麻子 )
Mako is an old childhood friend of Saori and an orphan who grew up with her strict grandmother. Although she is very intelligent and an excellent student, she suffers from low blood pressure, which makes her fall asleep standing up. Thanks to her quick learning ability, she becomes the official driver of Miho's tank after just one session during a training match.

In these situations she acts extremely effectively and is characterized by a successful and creative fighting style.
Momo Kawashima ( 河 嶋 桃 )
The spokeswoman for the Ōarai student council, who suffers from a somewhat wild temperament. She often reacts extremely impulsively to criticism and tends to lose her nerve and burst into tears in difficult and hopeless situations.
