Giuseppe Rossi (born February 1, 1987 in Teaneck , New Jersey , United States ) is an Italian-American football player who is under contract in Major League Soccer , where he plays for Real Salt Lake . He has both US and Italian citizenship and ran at national team level for Italy; for the senior Italian team he made 30 appearances (seven goals). At club level, he was under contract with Manchester United in England, FC Villarreal in Spain and AC Florence in Italy.

Family and childhood

Giuseppe Rossi's parents come from Italy. His father (1949-2010) comes from the Abruzzo region , his mother from Molise . The parents emigrated and left Europe to settle in Teaneck , New Jersey in the United States . Rossi grew up in Clifton . He discovered his passion for football through his father. Both parents were foreign language teachers at Clifton High School .

Career

In the club

Rossi played at AC Parma when he was young . In the summer of 2004, the then 17-year-old moved to the English club Manchester United , who first loaned him to Newcastle United in 2006/07 and then to FC Parma (formerly AC Parma ) for the second half of the same season . For Parma, Rossi scored a goal in his first game on January 21, 2007, which secured victory in the Serie A game against Torino . In the further course of the season he brought it on nine goals in 19 games and contributed to the relegation of the Emilian club.

On August 1, 2007, Rossi moved from Manchester United to Villarreal for around ten million euros . Already in his first season in Villarreal Rossi was able to secure a regular place and, together with strike partner Nihat Kahveci, played a major role in making his team runner-up. From 2009 Rossi and Nilmar formed the submarino amarillo storm duo .

At Villarreal, Rossi played regularly in the Champions League and Europa League . The 2010/11 season was particularly successful for him when he not only scored 18 league goals, but also made it into the semi-finals of the Europa League with Villarreal and contributed eleven competition goals.

In October 2011, the striker tore a cruciate ligament in his right knee , which forced him to take a break of several months. In April 2012, when Rossi was recovering and exercising again, he injured himself again on the same cruciate ligament . 2012 Rossi rose with Villarreal from the Primera División . Due to his injury, there was initially no new club. So he stayed in Villarreal in the first half of the season without being able to play.

During the winter break of the 2012/13 season Rossi moved to the Italian first division club Fiorentina . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2017, following Borja Valero and Gonzalo Rodríguez , who also moved to Florence from Villarreal at the beginning of the season. On the last day of the season, Rossi made his comeback in professional football after about a year and a half in the game against Delfino Pescara in 1936 .

For the second half of the 2015/16 season , Florence awarded Rossi to the Spanish first division club UD Levante . There he scored six goals in 17 league games, but could not avert relegation of the club.

For the 2016/17 season Rossi was loaned to Spain again, this time to Celta Vigo . In the game against SD Eibar in April 2017, Rossi tore a cruciate ligament for the third time , which is why he is expected to be out until October 2017.

After his contract in Florence expired, the CFC Genoa signed the clubless Rossi in December 2017. In May 2018 Rossi tested positive for dorzolamide in a doping test . The Italian anti-doping prosecutor has asked for a year-long ban. However, he was acquitted for ingesting the substance through eye drops. In late February 2020, Rossi returned to the United States and joined the franchise in Major League Soccer , Real Salt Lake , of Sandy , Utah .

In the national team

Rossi, who has both Italian and US citizenship , made the Italian selection in 2003 . From the U-16s he went through almost all the youth national teams in Italy and played 44 junior internationals in which he scored 20 goals. Rossi also took part with his country's Olympic selection at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , where he was the tournament's top scorer with four goals.

On October 11, 2008 Rossi made his debut under Marcello Lippi in the 0-0 in Bulgaria in the Italian national team . On June 6, 2009, the Italian scored his first goal for the Azzurri in a 3-0 win over Northern Ireland .

At the Confederations Cup in 2009 , he scored 1: 1 in the opening match against the USA after a 0-1 deficit and later 3: 1 for the Italians. For the 2010 World Cup , however, Rossi was not nominated by Lippi and the striker missed the 2012 European Championship due to a knee injury.

In Italy's World Cup qualifier against Armenia in October 2013, Rossi celebrated his comeback in the national team after more than two years.
