The Grienwiesensee, also called Schülesee after a previous owner , is a 11.5 hectare nature reserve (NSG number 1085) designated by ordinance of the Stuttgart regional council of August 13, 1980 in the area of the municipality of Unterensingen in the Esslingen district in Baden-Württemberg . For decades from 1903, the community of Unterensingen obtained its gravel needs from the former gravel pit. Already in 1920 the quarry pond had essentially reached its present size. In the meantime it has become a nationally significant ecological compensation area with well-developed silting zones. It is important as a resting place for migrating birds and as a retreat for threatened bird species. As the oldest dredging pond still in existence in the Neckar river system, it has developed into the most important breeding bird body that exists in this area today. The little bittern, the reed warbler , the reed warbler, the reed warbler, the coot, the moorhen, the little grebe and the great crested grebe breed here .

A peculiarity of the wild ducks also makes the Unterensinger lakes indispensable. The males lose all flight feathers at once towards the end of the breeding season ( full moult ). You will be unable to fly for about three weeks. An important prerequisite for this is an undisturbed reed area. The males of the entire breeding population from a room that extends beyond the districts of Göppingen and Esslingen have their moulting place in Unterensingen. In 1971 more than 100 mallard mauser pelas were recorded in Unterensingen.

The nature reserve No. 1095 Am Rank (Röhmsee) is directly connected to the Schülesee . The two lakes together form a protected area of around 25 hectares. The NSG belongs to the natural area 106 Filder in the Swabian Keuper-Lias-Land . It also belongs to the FFH area 7321-341 Filder .
