history

The Gestorf school was introduced in the course of the Reformation around 1540 and was first mentioned in a document on the occasion of the second church visit held in the town in 1588 . Here the Burgmannen zu Gestorf inform the ecclesiastical and princely visitors to Wolfenbüttel about their request to make the cleared town hall available as a school building in order to fill it with “a pious and gelart journeyman” [sic], a teacher who “dear youth to teach reading and writing and teaching in catechism ”.

This schoolmaster also worked as a sexton at the Gestorfer Evangelical Church until 1919 . Over a period of more than 200 years he had to teach more than 200 children at times , and it was not until 1797 that the church superiors, who were in charge of the school inspectorate, approved a second teaching position. In addition, a so-called " industrial school " was set up. Here a teacher instructed the girls in spinning , weaving , knitting , sewing , mending , darning and flattening . Later this school was officially incorporated into the elementary school and continued as a handicraft lesson. From the school chronicle shows that the first teacher and clerk some total of just five in 1901 hectares large plots to its sole usufruct had been provided.

In 1874 the school was divided into lower, middle and upper grades, but had no third teacher. In 1894 two teachers shared a total of 235 children. Due to the decline in the birth rate and population, the number of pupils fell to 84 in 1924, then slowly increased again, only to rise to the record level of 258 for the five teachers six years after the Second World War due to the influx of displaced persons from eastern Germany were available.

In the 2019/20 school year, around 46 children were taught by five teachers in three classes at the Gestorf primary school, which now only includes grades 1 to 4. Years 1 and 2 are combined as a combined class, classes 3 and 4 are trained separately.

In the “Lections Plan”, a timetable “for the first class of the school in Gestorf from Michaelis 1856 to Easter 1857”, 18 of the 36 hours per week (60 minutes each) consisted of religion or religious studies subjects such as “Reading the pericopes , reading in old times and New Testament , the reading of a passage from the Bible, church history, or the reading of the catechism lesson ”. 400 year celebration

The 400th anniversary of one of the oldest elementary schools received a lot of attention

In 1988 the Gestorf school was first mentioned in a document 400 years earlier. The anniversary year was celebrated on three days. Written congratulated German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Prime Minister Ernst Albrecht and the Bundestag Lattman . The state superintendent Badenhop , the Bundestag member Kiehm , the state parliament members Gansäuer and Mientus , district president Jakob, district administrator Hoppenstedt , mayor Woltmann and local mayor Rowoldt contributed greetings to the ceremony. The celebratory lecture was given by the historian Horst Callies , University of Hanover , who knew how to illustrate the 400 years of school history and how the teachers lived for centuries as the stepchildren of the communities. The school contributed to the success of the festive season with a historical exhibition and performances

school-building

In 1863 the school received a new building in neo-renaissance style

After the lessons had initially taken place in the evacuated town hall, the school received its own school building in the 18th century, consisting of a half-timbered building with a half- hipped roof in the village center . In 1863 Conrad Wilhelm Hase erected a larger building, a clinker brick building in the neo-renaissance style, opposite the village church . Around 1900 numerous new brick school buildings were built in Prussia , the facades of which were structured by plastered fields, corner pilasters , cornices and window frames. In 1901 the Gestorf elementary school received such a building. The entrance, which was initially let into the side bay house , was later closed by a window.
