Guido Markowitz (born May 23, 1969 in Villach ) is an Austrian choreographer and director . His catalog of works includes numerous new creations in ballet , contemporary dance and dance theater as well as direction and choreography for productions in music theater and drama . Guido Markowitz has been the ballet director at the Pforzheim Theater since 2015 .

Life

Guido Markowitz was born in Villach. In 1995 he completed his training as a stage dancer in classical as well as modern and contemporary dance at the Iwanson School in Munich .

Create

Immediately after his training, he received engagements at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and at the Münster Theater under the direction of Birgitta Trommler . In 1996 he moved to the Staatstheater Darmstadt as a soloist and choreographer , where he shaped Birgitta Trommler's work as a dancer for ten years .

In 2004, parallel to his commitment in Darmstadt, he began to expand his work as a choreographer and director. In 2006 he became resident choreographer at Tanzhaus NRW in Düsseldorf under the artistic direction of Bertram Müller . In addition to commissioned work for opera and drama etc. a. in Frankfurt am Main , Bochum , Cologne , Düsseldorf, Mannheim and Linz , choreographer Markowitz placed a focus on working with adolescents and young adults. Together with the Swiss dancer and choreographer Damian Gmür, between 2009 and 2011 he created the trilogy “Wilde Zeiten” (participants: 27 young people between 14 and 19 years of age), “Hammer Zeiten” (participants: 150 young people and young adults, film adaptation: “ Fabulous Times - That's Who We Are ”) and“ Secret Garden ”. Between 2010 and 2013, Guido Markowitz also worked with Daniela Rodriguez Romero. Together they created “And so What”, “Secret Garden”, “Respect”, “Angekommen”, “Challenge” and “Cage”. In 2012, Guido Markowitz took over the artistic direction of INDEX, the second youth company of Tanzhaus NRW, together with Amelie Jalowy.

In 2012 Guido Markowitz moved to the Schauspielhaus Bochum as resident choreographer . There were also new commissioned works u. a. for the Shenzhen Ballet China, the Gothenburg Opera , the Saarland State Theater , the Linz State Theater and the Ballet at the Graz Opera House .

In 2015 Guido Markowitz became ballet director, chief choreographer and director at the Stadttheater Pforzheim under the direction of artistic director Thomas Münstermann and administrative director Uwe Dürigen. So far, he has created “Heroes / The Lovers” (2016), “Mozart Requiem - Celebrate Life!” (2017), the three-part ballet evening “Metamorphoses” (2019) with a reinterpretation of for the Große Haus am Waisenhausplatz directly on the Enz Igor Stravinsky'sThe Firebird ” and the world premieres “ Ovid - Metamorphoses” on the concerto in Eb for chamber orchestra , “Dumbarton Oaks” by Igor Stravinsky and “Metamorphoses” on the five piano compositions of the same name by Philip Glass in his 1989 album “Solo Piano” In 2020 Guido Markowitz brought out an acclaimed premiere of his new choreographic creation “The Four Seasons” on music by Max Richter based on Antonio Vivaldi . A short time later, the digital re- enactment of the ballet was created under the title “Being human - Reenactment of the ballet“ The Four Seasons ”by Guido Markowitz”. In 2016 he created the ballet "Goldberg Variations" on music by Johann Sebastian Bach for the podium .

In addition, Guido Markowitz developed, together with Damian Gmür, a series of full-length site-specific productions in unusual locations in Pforzheim. The piece “Heimatwelten” (2015) was created for the St. Michael Castle Church (Pforzheim) , “Swim, if you can!” (2016) for the Emma-Jaeger-Bad and “Perfectly imperfect” (2018 ) in the Pforzheim jewelry museum in the Reuchlinhaus ). In 2019, the Gasometer Pforzheim with the 360-degree panorama by Yadegar Asisi became the stage for the TANZ PUR ballet evening, for which Damian Gmür and Edan Gorlicki and a choreographic collective from the southern Swedish city of Linköping created commissioned works. In 2021 Guido Markowitz will perform with the Ballet Theater Pforzheim under the title “Romeo and Juliet in the City” in the Bürgercentrum in the old town hall in Pforzheim.

The Ballet Theater Pforzheim was under his leadership and funded by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes TANZLAND cooperation partner of Waldkraiburg (2017 - 2018) and Metzingen (2018 - 2020).

Guido Markowitz has been a member of the board of the Dachverband Tanz Deutschland since 2018.

Artistic profile

Guido Markowitz takes a diversity approach . He works across divisions. His view of current events is a keenly analytical one. Existential themes of people, society, time and art are staged on the basis of a contemporary understanding of dance that incorporates and integrates different dance styles, as well as incorporating other arts. The way to find movement is through emotions and images that evoke rhythms, music, voice, silence and sound in him. He transforms his impressions for the stage with impressive images, including live music, objects and the means of the new media

Teaching

Guido Markowitz is a 1996 dance educator and lecturer operates. One of the first institutions in which he taught was "Rebeltanz - School for Artistic Dance" in Münster , where he taught dance in all classes up to training classes. He took part in the school education program of the city of Münster. In Darmstadt he worked as a lecturer for various dance studios and also took part in the city's school education program. In Stuttgart he worked as a guest lecturer at the New York City Dance School and was involved in the "Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Tanz Baden-Württemberg eV" (LAG). Between 2007 and 2010 he was a member of the board of the Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Tanz NRW eV Since 2018 Markowitz has been a lecturer in choreography at the Zurich University of the Arts .
