Gustav Karl Theodor Bogislaw Freiherr von Barnekow (born April 20, 1816 in Berlin , † August 24, 1882 in Merseburg ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Gustav was a member of the originally Rügish noble family von Barnekow . His parents were the Prussian Major General Gustav Friedrich von Barnekow (1779–1838) and his wife Henriette, née von Cornberg (1798–1861).

Career

At the age of 18 years Barnekow began his military career as a cadet in Potsdam , transferred as such to the 1830 cadet school in Berlin and eventually became 1834 Portepee ensign in the 4th Lancers of the Prussian army . After he was promoted to second lieutenant in 1835 and in 1840 to the Guards Artillery Brigade and in 1841 to the training squadron , he was appointed adjutant of the 6th Cavalry Brigade in 1845 . He took part in the fighting to put down the March Revolution , especially the street fights in Dresden and Iserlohn . Barnekow was then used in Baden and the Palatinate during the battles near Ludwigshafen , Wiesenthal, Waghäusel , Neudorf, Bruchsal , Durlach , Bischweier and Kuppenheim . In 1849 he received the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords, and advanced to the rank of Premier Lieutenant . In 1852 he received his patent and the promotion to Rittmeister , returned in 1853 to the 4th Uhlan Regiment and became squadron chief . In 1857 he joined the 1st Dragoon Regiment and was promoted to major two years later . At the same time Barnekow became a regular staff officer . During the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War , in 1859 he was commander of the 1st Landwehr Dragoons Regiment. In 1863 Barnekow became regimental commander à la suite of Hussar Regiment No. 12 and advanced to lieutenant colonel . Three years later he was promoted to colonel . In the war against Austria he fought in 1866 in the battle of Königgrätz and in the battle of Pressburg . His achievements during the war were awarded the Crown Order III. Class honored with swords.

Two years later Barnekow was appointed commander of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade under position à la suite of the Hussar Regiment No. 12 . In 1869 he received the Order of the Crown, Second Class with Swords on the Ring. Barnekow was commander of the 4th Cavalry Brigade in 1870 , rose to major general and took part in the war against France with distinction . He fought in the battles at Beaumont , Sedan ( Iron Cross II. Class), Orléans , Beaugency-Cravant , Le Mans and the battles at Petit Bicêtre , Marolles, Artanay, Coulmiers, Meung, Vendôme and Coulommiers. In 1871 Barnekow received the Commander's Cross of the Bavarian Military Merit Order and the Mecklenburg Military Merit Cross . In the same year he was again commander of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade and was awarded the Grand Commander's Cross of the Bavarian Order of Military Merit and the Iron Cross 1st Class. This was followed in 1874 by the award of the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords on the ring. Shortly before he became commandant of Danzig in 1875 , Barnekow was assigned to the staff of the 9th Division to represent the commander of the 9th Cavalry Brigade . Also in 1875 he received the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves and Swords, and was promoted to Lieutenant General. In 1877 Barnekow was put up for disposal with a pension under the award of the Commander's Cross of the House Order of Hohenzollern . He was an honorary knight of the Order of St. John .

family

Barnekow married Friederike Bertha Henriette Marianne von Rommel (1829–1912), daughter of the Prussian Lieutenant General Theodor von Rommel (1793–1868) in Torgau in 1850 . The marriage resulted in two children.
