The highest (in dialect / høkʃtə / ) is 837.8  m above sea level. NHN the highest elevation in Upper Swabia and Linzgau , also the highest elevation in the Sigmaringen district that does not belong to the Swabian Alb , the highest in the Lake Constance district and the highest between the Hegau volcanoes and the Allgäu .

geography

Geographical location

The highest is on the border between the Bodenseekreis with the municipality of Deggenhausertal in the south and the district of Sigmaringen with the municipality of Illmensee in the north. The municipality of Wilhelmsdorf in the Ravensburg district also has shares in the mountain. The closed village of Glashütten , which belongs to Illmensee, and the hamlet of Rubacker, which belongs to Deggenhausertal, are located on the ridge .

Watershed

The Rhine-Danube watershed , which is part of the main European watershed , runs over the highest . All streams that run north from the mountain reach the Danube and thus the Black Sea via the Andelsbach and Ablach . On the other hand, the rivers flowing south and west flow firstly over the Deggenhauser Aach and the Linzer Aach (Hintere Aach), which runs to the south-west, and secondly the streams that initially flow eastwards over the Rotach , which flows south, into Lake Constance , and thus into the Rhine and finally to the North Sea .

climate

Due to the altitude and the exposed location, the climate at the highest is significantly rougher than in the comparatively mild conditions in the valleys of Deggenhauser Aach and Rotach.

flora

The highest point in the foothills of the Alps is one of the few elevations of the last Ice Age ( Würme Ice Age ) that was not completely covered by glaciers. This is another reason why remnants of alpine vegetation have survived. Due to the cultural landscape of Upper Swabia and its agricultural management, these were pushed back to a few square meters.

Tourism and sport

The view of Lake Constance and the Alps makes the Höchst a popular excursion destination. Especially in late autumn and spring, it is used by the residents in the lowlands of Lake Constance. From the Wilhelmsdorf district of Zußdorf, a five-kilometer hiking trail leads through the Bettenreuter forest to the Höchst.

Germany's first permanent mountain race track for cyclists is at the highest. The Stoppomat is in the Schönemühle municipal car park near Urnau . Since 2006, cyclists and runners have used the Stoppomat systems around 22,000 times a year. The course record is held by the professional Jörg Ludewig from the Wiesenhof team .

On July 23, 2011 and July 21, 2012, the FkU eV hosted the German Mountain Championships of the Association of German Cyclists (BDR). In 2011 a journey time of less than 16 minutes was driven 24 times. The record for the Lightweight Uphill, which takes place once a year, is now 14:47 minutes (as of 2011).

Since 2007 the Freundeskreis Uphill has held a season opening of the Stoppomat on New Year's Day. The timing station, which is otherwise closed in winter, will be opened for 2 hours and the participants at the destination station will be welcomed with hot drinks in a heated marquee. In 2014, a further participant record was achieved with 324 time records.

Since 2015, the German Greyhound Breeding and Racing Association has held a coursing on a meadow below the Höchst viewpoint on the first weekend in October . In 2017, 120 greyhounds took part in this competition .

Winter sports can be practiced in the form of cross-country skiing on various trails. Due to their topographical location, they have been among the most varied in the region for around 30 years. Overall, the cross-country trails have the highest 21 kilometers in four loops. There is also a one-kilometer practice loop. There are starting points in Oberhomberg , Limpach , Glashütte, the Berggasthof Höchsten and the Höchst viewpoint. The Homberg – Limpach route is the route with the most vertical meters. If the weather is good and the snow conditions are good, there is also a panorama route, which over a length of four kilometers is one of the most panoramic routes towards Lake Constance. Because of the powdery snow consistency, the trails sometimes come into contact with the ground and there are occasional drifts on the plateaus. Due to the geographical location, a snowmobile with an attached tracking device is used, which was financed by the municipality of Illmensee and Deggenhausertal, the Deggenhausertal development association and the Gehrenberg-Bodensee tourism association.

Dialect border

Viewing pavilion in the summit area

Lake Constance is spoken south of the lake , Swabian north of the highest. The Berggasthof Höchsten maintains the Swabian-Alemannic dialect path with a path for celebrities around the viewing pavilion. Hikers can find out about the language border on display boards and get to know Swabian or Alemannic terms and phrases. In addition, the footprints of Erwin Teufel and other celebrities can be found in concrete on the circular route . The dialect path is kept as free as possible even in winter.

Ravensburg transmitter

At the highest is the 171 meter high Ravensburg transmitter .
