K-On! ( jap. け い お ん! , Keion! ) is a Yonkoma - Manga series by the illustrator and author Kakifly , which was published from April 2007 to September 2010 and again from April 2011 to June 2012. In 2009, the manga was by Kyoto Animation picked up and as Anime - television series adapted. The series was very successful and was able to set various records. At the time, it was the best-selling anime television series in the first week. A second season of the anime television series followed in 2010 and a feature film in 2011, both also by Kyōto Animation. But the music releases that emerged from the franchise were also hugely successful. The mini-album Hōkago Tea Time was the first album under the name of anime characters to reach 1st place in the Japanese music charts, and almost all of the more than two dozen singles were in the top 10.

action

1st season

At the center of the events are the four students Yui Hirasawa, Mio Akiyama, Ritsu Tainaka and Tsumugi Kotobuki, who have just recently been admitted to high school . However, so far only Mio and Ritsu know each other better, from which Ritsu comes up with the idea of reviving the former light music club ( 軽 音 楽 部 , Keiongaku-bu ). Her rabid nature succeeds in getting Mio to join and together they start looking for more members. The third member is quickly found when Tsumugi gets lost and accidentally runs into Ritsu and Mio's arms. Mugi, as Tsumugi is called by them, is enthusiastic about unusual ideas anyway and consequently joins the club. However, the search for a necessary fourth member turns out to be difficult and so, of all things, the rather clumsy sleepyhead Yui runs into the club room as the last hope. Although they only got to know Yui as an incompetent girl and soon the other members have to convince themselves of their inability to play instruments, they definitely want to keep Yui in order to get the regular minimum number of club members.

Since all other members have already chosen an instrument, the role of guitarist remains for Yui. But she has neither a guitar nor experience in handling it. So the members decide to buy one with her, but in the music shop she cannot get past a Gibson Les Paul that she really wants. However, this is far too expensive, so they take on various part-time jobs together. However, the money earned is nowhere near enough to finance the guitar. When Yui has almost discarded the idea of the guitar, Mugi manages to drastically negotiate the price. It turns out that this is hardly surprising, since to the astonishment of the other members Mugi's father is the owner of the entire chain of stores behind the store. Mio makes every effort to teach Yui to play the guitar, while Yui completely loses sight of studying for school. She completely fails an exam and threatens her exclusion from club activities. Ultimately, they manage to make Yui fit for the test in a joint effort, which she passes with flying colors. However, the other members of the band also have their problems. As a bassist, Mio is very shy and easily scared, which makes it almost impossible for her to perform in front of a larger audience. Ritsu, the drummer and leader of the band, regularly forgets to fill out the applications in good time and ultimately has to rely on the support of Yui's childhood friend and student council member Nodoka Manabe. Meanwhile, Mugi regularly supplies the band with tea and cake, which encourages them to talk more than to play music.

In the next few days, however, a stroke of fate overtakes the school because their club cannot identify a supervisor in the form of a teacher. So they try by all means to persuade Sawako Yamanaka, who does not want to have anything to do with the music club. As the students soon find out, there is a special reason for this. After all, Sawako herself was the former front singer of Keiongaku-bu, which would not fit at all with her current image as a teacher. Ultimately, however, this is exactly the weak point that Ritsu needs to persuade them to take over the club in an almost blackmailing way.

In the days and weeks that followed, the students were confronted with Sawako's cosplay fantasies, which put the easily scared Mio to the test. The situation worsens when shortly before the first major performance, Yui loses her voice due to the hard vocal training and Mio is the only remaining singer. Nevertheless she manages to overcome herself and they give their first big concert.

The next major section of the plot begins, after a successful year, with the appearance at the inauguration ceremony for the newcomers. The band succeeds in impressing the newly schooled Azusa Nakano, who doesn't really dare to join the club because she thinks she's too good. So initially the search for new members remains unsuccessful, whereby the members, as in the first time, are quite clumsy. Yui's sister, who also started school, is not able to provide additional staff either. Ultimately, however, the situation arises that Azusa manages to go to the club. Instead of encountering a professional band as expected, she is faced with a bunch of tea drinkers and cake eaters, the antics of Sawako and never-ending practice sessions. This made the very experienced guitar player Azusa doubt whether to remain a member of the band, which set itself the goal of performing in the Nippon Budōkan . Already missed by the other members, she returns, because she has now accepted the band's purpose - just having fun and having a good time together . Ultimately, they can give a first concert with Azusa together and the five friends keep growing together.

2nd season

This story arc continues in the second season of the anime, with the third and final year getting closer and closer. So the third attempt to find more members for the band fails and the four older members start to worry about Azusa's whereabouts, which turn out to be unfounded. So the band continues to spend their time experiencing all sorts of things and dealing with everyday problems from students and musicians. In doing so, however, they are becoming increasingly professional and, in particular, Mio now has her own fan club, although she still suffers a little from her nervousness. Nevertheless, the members become much more adult over time, even if they lapse into their usual childlike manner again and again. So they finally give their last school concert and it is more and more towards the end, whereby Yui and Ritsu in particular cannot decide which future path they will take. Meanwhile, Mio gives up her plans to attend an elite university to stay with Yui, Tsumugi and Ritsu.

Characters

The work focuses on the school band Hōkago Tea Time ( 放 課後 テ ィ ー タ イ ム , dt. "Tea time after school"), which consists of the five high school students Yui Hirasawa , Ritsu Tainaka , Mio Akiyama , Tsumugi Kotobuki and Azusa Nakano , who joins them a little later . The surnames of the characters were slightly changed by the members of the Japanese band P-Model . The distribution of roles within the formatting is also identical.

What all five main characters have in common is that they have certain character deficits that they can gradually, but not completely, reduce over the course of the game. Nevertheless, the girls find each other and harmonize with each other, which is also reflected in their music, which is neither played well nor professional, but can still inspire its audience. As schoolgirls they also have to struggle with the typical problems of everyday school life, which makes them very close friends. This becomes particularly clear towards the end of the series, when they have to leave the one year younger Azusa behind after graduating from school and that Mio decides to pursue the same educational path as Yui and Ritsu despite her good performance.

The names of the more important supporting characters come from the members of the band The Pillows . Although they are not part of the band, they play key roles. Likewise, the other classmates, who play very insignificant supporting roles, lead a life of their own, which was particularly careful in the second season without going into detail.

Origin and publications

The title of the manga is derived from the Japanese word Keiongaku ( 軽 音 楽 , German for "light music, light music"). The club name results from the fact that school music clubs ( 音 楽 部 , ongaku-bu ) often correspond to a school choir or orchestra. So keiongaku refers to the fact that pop music is being played.

The manga, which is held in the style of a Yonkoma and is written and drawn by Kakifly , appears since the May 2007 issue within the Seinen magazine Manga Time Kirara , which was sold from April 9, 2007. Since August 28, 2008, the manga series has also been published every six months within the Manga Time Kirara Carat magazine . The last chapter of the manga series appeared on September 9, 2010 in the October issue of Manga Time Kirara magazine .

The individual chapters of the manga have been summarized in four tankōbon issues that appeared on April 26, 2008, February 26, 2009, December 18, 2009 and September 27, 2010. All publications of the manga have so far been edited by Hōbunsha .

The first two anthologies of the previously quite unknown manga rose from positions 76 and 91 to positions 26 and 27 in the Japanese comic charts in the week of April 7th to 13th, 2009, in the course of the broadcast of the anime television series. The circulation increased to around 21,000 copies sold weekly.

On June 24, 2009, a 16-page publication, drawn by Kakifly , appeared in the August issue of Manga Time Kirara Forward . In contrast to the previous publications, this is not a Yonkoma with a four-part structure, but a coherent short story with variable page layout. In terms of content, it is a look back at Mios and Ritsu's past when they both visited primary school as friends.

In April 2011, the series was continued in the Manga Time Kirara from issue 5/2011 from April 9, 2011, as well as the Manga Time Kirara Carat from issue 6/2011 from April 28, 2011. The plot in the Manga Time Kirara is devoted to the band's experiences at university and the plot in the Manga Time Kirara Carat to the experiences of Azusa, Ui and Jun, who continue the music club at the high school. The university series in the Manga Time Kirara ended with issue 7/2012 on June 9, 2012, the high school series in the Manga Time Kirara Carat with issue 8/2012 on June 28, 2012. The new chapters have been summarized in two anthologies: K-On ! college ( け い お ん! college ) was released on September 27, 2012 and K-On! highschool ( け い お ん! highschool ) on October 27, 2012.

The six volumes were published in English by Yen Press from December 2010 to October 2013 and in Germany by Imprint Carlsen Manga! from May 2012 to January 2014.

Adaptations

Anime

The anime television series animated by Kyōto Animation was directed by Naoko Yamada . It was first shown on TBS on Japanese TV from April 3 to June 26, 2009 after midnight (the previous TV day ) . Several other broadcasters, including BS-i , HBC and MBS, repeated the series about one to two weeks after the first broadcast of the episodes in question . In contrast to the first broadcast, the other stations also offered the series in widescreen format .

In Japan, the series was released from July 29, 2009 to January 20, 2010 on seven data carriers divided into DVD and limited to Blu-ray Disc , with the seventh data carrier containing an episode that was not previously shown on television. As extras ( omakes ) there were a few additional clips on the data carriers that caricatured the peculiarities or the character traits of the five main characters.

From July 29, 2011, the anime label Kazé Germany will release the first season in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on 4 DVDs. The 1st volume is also available in a limited version with a slipcase.

A second season of the series was released at the conclusion of the Let's Go! announced on December 30, 2009. This ran from April 7, 2010 to September 29, 2010 after midnight under the title K-On !! ( け い お ん !! , Keion !! ) on TBS, with almost 30 channels following in parallel within a month, and comprised 26 episodes, 24 regular episodes that were broadcast until September 15, 2010, and two special episodes. The main cast of both the staff and the voice actors from the first season was taken over. The second season appeared in Japan on a total of nine data carriers (DVD / BD), which were released from July 30, 2010 to March 16, 2011. The ninth data carrier also contains a special episode that was not broadcast on television.

Conception

The immediate surroundings of the school and the city are based on real locations from Kyoto , which were adapted for the anime. In many previous works such as The Melancholie der Haruhi Suzumiya , Clannad or Kanon , Kyōto Animation was based on real models. For example, parts of the Nanzen-ji aqueduct can be seen in the opening credits. In the quite simply designed school building, in which a large part of the action takes place, turtles cut from wood stand out, which adorn the railing of the stairways and are also picked up again and again by the "camera" within the classrooms. This is also a reference to the old school building of Toyosato Elementary School , built in 1937 and designed by William Merrell Vories , in which the premises can also be found.

Various recurring elements can be identified in the anime. For example, a statue in front of the school is repeatedly faded in, which was regularly disfigured by additional items such as a wig , a hat, etc. In addition, the anime took up various well-known idols or figures stylized as rock idols, which are supposed to reflect the visual ideas of the characters. Before entering the club room for the first time, Yui thought of a heavy metal band , which is a direct reference to Johannes Krauser II from Detroit Metal City . So it was not surprising that the club supervisor Sawako Yamanaka meets in a flashback to her first love for Sōichi Negishi, who had played Johannes Krauser II in his double role in Detroit Metal City . In addition to these allusions, various characters from other works also made cameo appearances in K-On! . One example would be Tomoya from Clannad , whom Yui meets in the hallway.

In the second season K-On !! More attention was paid to the representation of the senior class, so that many new characters were introduced who, with the exception of Jun Suzuki, only had minor supporting roles, but were nonetheless casually integrated. It is particularly noticeable that almost no male characters appeared in the second season and were also not mentioned by name.

Movie

On September 29, 2010, after the final episode of the second season aired and on the anime's website, it was announced that K-On! as a film Eiga K-On! should be adapted. The production staff remained the same with respect to the series.

While the series followed the manga, the plot of the film is an original story that takes place shortly after the manga or the second season.

The film opened in 137 cinemas on December 3, 2011. In the first 16 days, 700,000 tickets were sold and almost a billion yen were brought in. By the beginning of May this had doubled to 1.9 billion yen. A release on DVD and Blu-ray Disc is planned for July 18, 2012.

At the Animation Kobe 2012 award event , Eiga K-On! awarded as “Best Cinema”.

K-On!

In the opening credits of the first series K-On! became the title Cagayake! Girls , sung by Aki Toyosaki with Yōko Hikasa, Satomi Satō and Minako Kotobuki. The end credits are the title Don't say “lazy”, which was also interpreted by the seiyū of the main characters. Both were released in a limited and a normal version.

Both tracks were released on April 22nd, 2009 as an independent single under the music group name Sakurakō Keionbu ( 桜 高 軽 音部 , dt. "Entertainment music club of the Sakura [gaoka] high school") and could be directly in the top 10 of the Japanese single Place charts. Both singles were listed there on April 21, as the singles could already be purchased the evening before. The single Don't say “lazy” entered the daily charts at number 3 with 20,553 sales on the first evening - immediately followed by Cagayake! Girls in 4th place with 18,292 sales. In the following days, both singles rose to number 1 and 2 and were thus at the top of the charts as a duo. In the weekly charts they finally reached places 2 and 4. Both reached the gold status of the RIAJ in May 2009 . In relation to the first six months of music in 2009 (measurement period: December 22, 2008 to June 15, 2009) Don't say “lazy” landed in 16th place with 134,555 copies sold, and Cagayake! A third single called Fuwa Fuwa Jikan ( ふ わ ふ わ 時間 , dt. "Fluffy / light time") was released on May 20, 2009 and reached third place in the Japanese singles charts in the first week with 39,458 copies sold. In this first week all 3 singles were in the top 20 at the same time.

On June 3, 2009, an original soundtrack for the television series was released. This contained 36 titles of various lengths that had been used within the series to decorate certain scenes, but no titles from the previously published and successful singles.

On June 22, 2009 the mini-album Hōkago Tea Time ( 放 課後 テ ィ ー タ イ ム , dt. "Tea time after school") by the music group of the same name, which consists of the 5 main characters. With more than 67,000 copies sold in the first week, it topped the album charts.

On August 12, 2009, the club supervisor Sawako and based on episode 4, the single Maddy Candy was released under the band name Death Devil . It reached number 9 in the first week. In contrast to the other merchandising records that fall into the J-Pop genre , this one contains heavy metal music.

On September 2, 2009, the TV anime compilation "K-On!" Official Band Yarō yo !! (Band Score Tsuketari) ( TV ア ニ メ 「け い お ん!」 オ フ ィ シ ャ ル バ ン ド や ろ ー よ !! (バ ン ド ス コ ア 付) , dt Titles of the two first released singles Cagayake! Girls and don't say “lazy” . The titles were found on two CDs in a wide variety of variations, which were intended to be used to learn how to play the titles with an enclosed music book. The first CD contained 29 tracks and the second even 80 tracks. In some tracks, for example, exactly one instrument was deliberately left out or the title was recorded particularly slowly. In the Japanese album charts it reached the 8th place with 16,526 copies sold within the first week. The instrumental album TV anime "K-On!" Official Band Yarō yo !! Part 2 (Band Score Tsuketari) ( TV ア ニ メ 「け い お ん!」 オ フ ィ シ ャ ル バ ン ド や ろ ー よ !! PART2 (バ ン ド ス コ ア 付) ) was released on March 3rd, 2010. This contained six variants of Fuwa Fuwa Jikan , each of which also left out an instrument, as well as the A and B sides of the single Maddy Candy, each with and without a guitar, and thus only 10 tracks in contrast to its predecessor.

On June 6, 2010, the maxi single Pure Pure Heart ( ぴ ゅ あ ぴ ゅ あ は ー と , Pyua Pyua Hāto ) by Hōkago Tea Time was released . This reached number 4 in the charts. Another single from Death Devil called Love ( ラ ヴ , Rabu ) followed on June 23, which was 7th in the week of publication and thus two places better than Maddy Candy by the same artist. The first releases of the Character Image Singles were those for the characters Yui Hirasawa and Mio Akiyama. They were released together on June 17, 2009. In the first week (June 15-21) they reached the 2nd ( K-On! Image Song: Akiyama Mio ) and 3rd ( K-On! Image Song: Hirasawa Yui ) place with 32,881 and 31,384 singles sold Japanese singles chart.

The publications on Ritsu Tainaka, Tsumugi Kotobuki and Azusa Nakano came out on August 26th and reached positions 4, 5 and 3 on the first day. At the end of the first week of sales, all three singles were in the top ten of the Japanese single charts. They took places 5 (26,000), 6 (25,000) and 3 (28,000). In doing so, they set another record: It was the first time that three character image singles, which were released on the same day, were in the charts in the top ten at the same time. Previously, two character image singles from Macross Frontier had reached places 7 and 8 and held the previous record.

On October 21, 2009, singles for the characters Ui Hirasawa and Nodoka Manabe were released. Both reached places 8 and 9 in the first week.

The second series K-On !! also receives a series of eight character image singles. The first two singles for Mio Akiyama and Yui Hirasawa were released on September 21, 2010 and entered the Oricon charts at number 4 and 5 respectively. The next three singles for Azusa Nakano, Ritsu Tainaka and Tsumugi Kotobuki were released on November 17, 2010 and reached positions 9 to 11 on the charts with 7,700, 7,100 and 7,000 copies sold in the first week. The last three singles for Ui Hirasawa, Nodoka Manabe and Jun Suzuki were also released at the same time on January 19, 2011 and were again able to place in the top 10.

Internet radio broadcast

The internet radio show Rajion started even before the anime started broadcasting! ( ら じ お ん! , Suitcase word from rajio (radio) and K-On! ) Which was moderated by the Seiyū Aki Toyosaki , Yōko Hikasa , Satomi Satō and Minako Kotobuki . In later episodes, as in the anime, the staff was supplemented by the Nakano Azusa speaking Taketatsu Ayana . The still-ongoing broadcast began on February 9, 2009. Since then, a new episode has been broadcast weekly. In the show, the speakers talked about the anime and its current events, but also about playing musical instruments. Building on their musical experience - mostly none, as most of them were pure singers and speakers - they passed on their impressions while learning the instruments. In the same way as the anime, she accompanied the show in her attempt to found a band with the aim of holding a real live performance at the end of the effort. For example, Yōko Hikasa stated, for the sake of fun, that she had only played triangles before and now tried to master an electric bass . As a result, there were many funny incidents on the show that made the show really appealing. A radio play CD was released on February 24 and March 17, 2010, which reached number 43 and 44 respectively and were in the general album charts for two weeks.

reception

Like many of the templates previously filmed by Kyōto Animation , the characters captivate with a pronounced " Moe load ", which is reflected in a highly belittled presentation. This has already been warned several times in advance by Western critics, as it would not suit everyone's taste. However, this statement contrasts with the outstanding sales figures, which in no way can confirm these concerns, at least within Japan. The characters' eyes are noticeably large, while the legs are supposedly shortened, which is further reinforced in the visually presented trains of thought, which also repeatedly show the characters in cosplay fantasies. A scene in which Mio falls over a cable and, due to the unfavorable fall, presented her underwear to the audience, attracted particular attention. The real viewer doesn't get to see anything of this, however, because instead of the supposedly blue and white striped Shimapan (striped underpants), a cleverly faded over a shell of the same pattern. The degree of perception of this scene can be seen in the offer of a dinnerware set containing that dining bowl on Comiket 76.

AKG K701 headphones as
worn by Mio in her apartment

In the series, many real products were shown true to the original or only marginally changed. Especially in the case of musical instruments and accessories, fans of the series led to a sharp increase in sales, as in the case of Fender electric basses, or even to sell-out, as in the case of headphones from the AKG K701 model . Music equipment dealers also advertised its use directly in the series. The franchise also includes a large number of merchandising items. The merchandising items even include a Kitty Hawk model aircraft carrier with a K-On! Theme, manufactured by Fujimi Mokei. The fact that the merchandising articles also have high sales proceeds is shown by the fact that the TBS channel alone only came to K-On !! in the second quarter of 2010 with its merchandising articles. Earned 1.8 billion yen.

Even while the series was being broadcast, the first cameo appearances were made in series running at the same time. That's how the four main characters sat in the ninth episode of Natsu no Arashi! as guests in the café. Also in later mangas and anime, K-On! picked up as a motif or such as B. parodied in Seitokai no Ichizon .

Sales of the anime

The first Blu-ray Disc with the first two episodes sold more than 33,000 times in the first week and was thus after the anime film Evangelion: 1.11 - You Are (Not) Alone. second best-selling publication on this medium. Almost 8,000 copies of the DVD version were sold. A total of 40,000 copies of the first Blu-ray were sold in 2009, making it fifth in the annual ranking in the animation and special-effect Blu-rays category. The following Blu-Ray releases of Blu-Ray boxes 2 to 4 also achieved first place in their respective first week of sales. By February 2011, the entire franchise had sold more than 500,000 Blu-ray discs, making it the best-selling anime series.

Success of music releases

The two first released singles Cagayake! Girls and Don't say “lazy” were very successful in the first few weeks and beyond, which meant that they not only reached the hard core of the fans. This is how they aroused the interest of occasional customers. In the same context, this was seen as yet another example of the anime market not being hit by the recession to the same extent as other areas, given that audiences cover a wide range of ages. Such publications are said to have contributed significantly to the results of the first half of the Japanese music market. Because of this achievement, K-On! for Don't say “lazy” at the 14th Animation Kobe, the prize for the best theme song ( Radio Kansai Prize) after a pre-selection was made through a public vote. But the other publications of the franchise also achieved unusually high chart positions. The mini-album Hōkago Tea Time crowned the previous releases of the franchise with a new record. It was the first music release to reach 1st place in the music charts under the name of anime characters - including the single charts. The Singles Go! Go! Maniac and Lists !! to the opening and closing credits of the second series K-On !! occupied both top positions in their first week. After Keiko Fuji in 1970 and Seiko Matsuda in 1983, this was only the third time that a singer or female music group managed to position two singles in first and second place at the same time. Finally, five K-On! Singles were among the top 100 singles of 2010. Overall, all 20 singles started in the top 10 of the charts.

Further awards

At the 2010 Tōkyō Anime Awards , K-On! named Best Anime TV Series along with Higashi no Eden , and in 2011 season two won K-On !! the same award together with the series Yojōhan Shinwa Taikei ( The Tatami Galaxy ).

The second season of K-On !! was awarded the 15th animation Kobe on October 15, 2010 as the best television series of the year.

The character Azusa Nakano won the final of the Saimoe 2010 popularity contest .
