Hưng Yên with the capital Hưng Yên is one of the smaller provinces of Vietnam . It extends over 923 km² and has about one million inhabitants. It makes up 0.28% of the area and 1.3% of the population of Vietnam.
Hưng Yên borders the provinces of Bắc Ninh and Hanoi in the north, Hanoi in the west, Hải Dương in the east, Hà Nam and Thái Bình in the south.
Various ethnic groups live in the province, the majority of which are Việt / Kinh .
From 1968 to 1996 it formed the Hải Hưng Province together with the neighboring Hetei Dương Province .
