hr3 is the pop wave of the Hessischer Rundfunk (hr) and alongside hr1 , hr2-kultur , hr4 , hr-iNFO and YOU FM one of the broadcaster's six radio programs. The studios of the program are located in the hr-Funkhaus in Frankfurt ; from there it is produced and broadcast. Most of the music played on hr3 - “your hits in your favorite mix” - comes from the field of German and international pop music: Current hits are combined with songs from the last 30 years at hr3.

History of the station

The third program (also: 3rd program) of the Hessischer Rundfunk was founded on June 1st, 1964. The start of broadcasting of hr3 as a service wave under its current name was on April 23, 1972; Thus the third radio program of the Hessischer Rundfunk was the second German broadcaster to offer a traffic information service around the clock.

"Hr3 - the service wave from Frankfurt" sent information from the traffic police and the automobile associations, which in this way could quickly and directly reach road users and thus contributed to greater safety and smoothness on the road. In addition, on all motorway entrances and major federal highways in Hesse, blue signs with the transmitter's logo and the information about the reception frequencies alerted the driver to the possibility of being guided "radio-controlled" on the cheapest route. The close cooperation with Bayern 3 , the already existing service wave of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation in Munich, guaranteed motorists a seamless information network over large parts of Germany as far as Austria.

From 1975 the service wave hr3 also took over the information for inland navigation and was thus expanded to an area that played an important role in Hessian economic life. HR3 issued warnings in the event of acute danger, obstructions due to high and low water, ice drift or fog, and reported ship congestion and major events that unpredictably impaired shipping.

For years, the trademark of the service wave at that time and its traffic editorial team was “Das Radiobienchen”: an hr3 reporter for the station was regularly on the way over Hesse in the small plane and warned all motorists of traffic obstructions from a bird's eye view.

On May 2, 1977 - with the start of the summer program - hr3 stopped the program exchange with Bayern 3 . This gave the Hessischer Rundfunk the opportunity to adapt the hr3 program specifically to the Hessian listener in the hours previously taken over by Bayern 3.

At the end of the 1970s, the moderators Werner Reinke and Thomas Koschwitz began to cultivate a private feud, invented especially for the radio, as a cabaret interlude. Sometimes they disrupted the broadcasts of the colleague, sometimes they beat each other down in successive programs. This staged ongoing dispute was a mixture of preparation and improvisation: the listeners could not see which attacks had been discussed or even worked out together and when the opponents played real pranks on their counterparts in order to test their repartee. Since the exchange of blows was increasingly conceived on the model of a soap opera, the listener loyalty increased because some peaks were only understandable with knowledge of the previous history and many listeners did not want to miss the foreseeable "retaliation blow".

In contrast to today's uniform structure, the hr3 music program in the 1970s consisted of a wild mix of hits, operettas, folk and pop music. Such a musical potpourri is only possible on special days today.

A step in today's direction was taken five years after the start of broadcasting, when evening programs such as “hr3 Top Time” and “Hard 'n' Heavy” were launched as part of a program expansion. At the beginning of the 1980s, hr3 finally became a pop wave. So in 1981 - in the "inspiring atmosphere of a Frankfurt pub" - the then hr3 boss Werner Klein with the moderators Martin Hecht, Werner Reinke and Thomas Koschwitz hatched new program titles. The new hr3 program developed in this way then went on air in May 1981 with programs such as "Pop & Weck", "Pinboard", "Mittags-Diskotheke", "Stereobox", "hr-Dreierlei" and "hr dry on the rocks" .

hr3 was the first radio station to broadcast a non-stop DJ program, the "hr3 clubnight". This ran for many years in hr3 from May 5, 1990, until it was taken over by hr XXL, the then young radio program of the Hessischer Rundfunk. Until it was discontinued on June 14, 2014, “hr3 clubnight” could be heard in the follow-up program YOU FM .

One of the most popular hr3 programs of the 1990s was the "hr3 Bombi-Show", hosted by hr3 boss Jörg Bombach ("Bombi") and Mirko Förster ("IM Jäger"). During the winter months it had its fixed broadcasting slot on Friday mornings. Regular live performances by Hessian bands and wind orchestras made the “hr3 Bombi Show” the only German morning radio show with live music. In addition, every week one listener was allowed to be there live in the studio as "Schnittchen-Assi". But not only the show developed into a cult over the years, but also the talking sheep Manfred. This was actually created in the 1990s to bridge technical problems during the broadcast. Manfred won the hearts of the listeners and sometimes stole the show from the presenter. After a few years, the news that Manfred had suddenly given birth to healthy offspring caused a stir. A "biological sensation"!

In 1994 the station surprised its listeners when the hr3 morning program “hr3 pop & weck”, the studio and the moderators suddenly appeared in phases parallel to the radio on the third Hessian television program. In October 2015, the long-standing name of the morning show was renamed from “hr3 pop & weck” to “hr3 Morningshow”. Another name change took place from January to June 2016 when the program was renamed “Die Daniel Fischer-Morningshow”. The reason for this was the start of radio presenter Daniel Fischer : after 16 years of working for the competitor broadcaster FFH, he had switched to hr3. After five months, however, they parted ways again and since July 11, 2016 Tobias Kämmerer has been moderating the - again renamed - “hr3 morning show” together with Tanja Rösner .

In addition to the daily radio program, hr3 was and is also responsible for numerous major events, such as B. "hr3 @night". The largest one-day radio festival in Germany first took place in 2001 and 2002 in Kassel, before continuing in Frankfurt from 2005. Well-known bands, DJs, comedians and of course the hr3 presenters performed on many of the stages throughout the city. The major event took place ten times in Frankfurt.

After 22 years at the helm of the station, hr3 boss Jörg Bombach handed over management to his successor Jan Vorderwülbecke on December 1, 2014, who has been running the hr3 and YOU FM programs under one roof ever since.

Program & target group

Since the station was first established, the hr3 program has changed fundamentally: the formerly pure traffic station "hr3 - Die Servicewelle aus Frankfurt" has become a pop wave. hr3 would particularly like to address families and working people aged 25 to 49+ and offer an entertaining and informative daily program. This includes topics from all Hessian regions, suggestions for everyday life, comedy as well as entertaining program actions, weather (from the ARD weather competence center) and - every half hour - world news. For this purpose, hr3 uses the worldwide ARD correspondent network. With the mix of entertainment, information, service and comedy, the focus is on the music (“your hits in your favorite mix”).

hr3 broadcasts Monday to Friday from 5 a.m. to midnight, Saturday and Sunday from 6 a.m. to midnight. During the rest of the time, the ARD Pop Night will be broadcast.

The daily program of hr3 is currently divided into five programs, Mondays to Fridays: In the morning from 5 to 9.30 the day begins with the most popular show of the station “The Morning Show with Tobi Kämmerer and Tanja Rösner”. The morning show will be followed by the program “hr3 am morning” from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm, which is usually moderated by Julia Tzschätzsch or Jasmin Pour. The presenter of the same name can be heard in the following "Kate Menzyk Show" from 1.30pm to 5.30pm. This is followed by “hr3 on Saturday afternoon” until 6 p.m. The day ends with "hr3 on Saturday evening" from 6 pm to midnight. The respective moderators of the Saturday programs change at regular intervals.

Sunday on hr3 starts at 6 o'clock with "hr3 on Sunday morning", the Hessian hero of the week and the crime scene check. From 10 am, presenter Bärbel Schäfer takes over until 12 noon with her program “Der Sonntagstalk in hr3”, in which she interviews her guests on a wide variety of topics. Guests are celebrities from entertainment, politics, business, sport, science, literature and art, but also people from everyday life who give a personal insight into their lives. At 12 noon it continues with "hr3 am Sonntag noon" with Mathias Münch, who and his listeners. a. takes a look at the upcoming “hr3 morning show” week. From 5 pm to 8 pm, presenter Frank Seidel will present his “hr3 chart show”, in which he plays the 30 most popular hits among hr3 listeners, introduces new songs and rounds off his presentations with exciting facts. The evening ends - with changing moderators - from 8 p.m. to midnight “hr3 on Sunday evening”. With the exception of “Der Sonntagstalk in hr3”, “hr3 am Sonntag Afternoon” and the “hr3 Chartshow”, the moderators of the respective Sunday programs change at regular intervals.

Overall, in addition to its program, hr3 also draws attention to itself with major program activities. The station raffled z. For example, in “Hesse's biggest car hunt”, cars that listeners had to search for using various information given in the daily program, or paid his listeners the rent or the for a year as part of the “Happy home, happy Hessen - rent free with hr3” campaign Home loan.

In January 2020, hr3 introduced its new claim “hr3 - at home in Hessen” in order to place even more emphasis on regionality and proximity to the listeners in the future. Previous claims were e.g. B. "hr3 - the one with the favorite songs", "hr3 - full of life", "hr3 - the music in me" and "hr3 - this is where the music plays". The station voice is Andreas Ersson.

According to Media Analysis 2019 Radio II, hr3 has a daily reach of 1,182,000 listeners Monday to Friday and an average of 358,000 listeners / hour Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
