The former municipality of Haaren is four kilometers northeast of Aachen city ​​center and has been part of the city of Aachen as a district since January 1, 1972.

Haaren lies at the mouth of the Haarbach in the Wurm river . 2 km to the east is the rural district of Verlautenheide . The highest point is the Haarberg at 239 meters .

As of December 31, 2015, the town had 12,507 inhabitants and an area of ​​880 ha.

history

In the Carolingian period (768–814), today's local area belonged to the Aachen royal court and the royal wilderness forest and probably also to the Würselener Königsgut Wormsalt . The first documentary mention can be found in 1152 in the Annales Rodenses , the Klosterrath yearbooks. Up until the 18th century, Haaren and Verlautenheide formed one of the quarters of the Aachen Empire . In 1792 and again in 1794 the area was occupied by the French. Haaren and Verlautenheide became independent Mairie Haaren and belonged to France since 1801 ( Peace of Lunéville ) and to Prussia since 1814 ( First Peace of Paris ).

In the 1920s, Haaren was mainly a workers' suburb for the factories on Jülicher Strasse in the north-east of Aachen. At that time, Haaren was a stronghold of the KPD .

In October 1944, Haaren was occupied by American troops and came under American and later British administration. With the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Haaren community became independent within the Aachen district. On January 1, 1972, it was incorporated into the city of Aachen due to the Aachen Act .

Well Überhaaren is on the street Auf der Hüls , formerly Südstraße. The keystone of the gateway bears the year 1692. The manor is already mentioned in the list of imperial court fiefs of the imperial city of Aachen towards the end of the 13th century .

The Welsche Mühle in the Haarbachtal is the only watermill in Aachen whose mill wheel is still in operation.
