In the Carolingian period (768–814), today's local area belonged to the Aachen royal court and the royal wilderness forest and probably also to the Würselener Königsgut Wormsalt . The first documentary mention can be found in 1152 in the Annales Rodenses , the Klosterrath yearbooks. Haaren and Verlautenheide became independent Mairie Haaren and belonged to France since 1801 ( Peace of Lunéville ) and to Prussia since 1814 ( First Peace of Paris ).
In the 1920s, Haaren was mainly a workers' suburb for the factories on Jülicher Strasse in the north-east of Aachen. At that time, Haaren was a stronghold of the KPD .
In October 1944, Haaren was occupied by American troops and came under American and later British administration. With the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Haaren community became independent within the Aachen district. On January 1, 1972, it was incorporated into the city of Aachen due to the Aachen Act .
